For some one I respect very much, this is for you. For your coming birthday!
Love, S
"Sir, there is a registered letter for you on your desk. They asked it to be personally delivered." Aditi shuffled her feet slightly. Her heels were killing her, but they made her legs look long and she wanted to impress her boss.
She looked at his bent head longingly; the coarse, raven hair was combed back ruthlessly from his high forehead. The bronze skin on his face had a healthy glow to it and reflected the time he spent outdoors. The s**y, heavy lidded eyes lingered hesitantly on the letter before going back to the laptop screen.
"Why didn't you open it?" His modulated voice had a timbre that made her toes curl.
Despite of her efforts, she shivered. He had this effect on every woman under fifty in the office, and he was blithely oblivious to the fact.
"Sir, it says 'Private and confidential'. The delivery man is waiting outside the office to make sure it was received by you." Aditi proffered a pen and a pad to get his signature.
His eyes lifted from the screen momentarily in confusion. The flecks surrounding his irises looked bright gold as they landed on his junior administrative assistant. He took the pen from her hands. She noted to her dismay that his touch was disinterested and aloof. She waited until he signed the pad with his bold scrawl. With a silent sigh, she turned and walked away from his office.
He lifted the envelope and weighed it in his hands gingerly. He reached for the letter opener and saw it was missing. He scowled irritably and inserted his index finger in the envelope and ripped it in a flourish.
He let out an epithet as the paper cut into his flesh and a dark drop of blood appeared on his finger pad. He popped the finger into his mouth and sucked on the blood letting the saltiness seep into his mouth.
With his other hand, he flicked open the letter and read the brief contents. It was a legal letter asking him to attend a meeting in seedy part of town at ten a.m, the next day. The short notice made him frown. He was scheduled to go to Brazil that evening, and the timing didn't suit him at all. The worse part was the brevity of the letter, it contained no details, except saying that he needs to take the deliverance of some ancestral property as the custodian of the house expired a week ago.
He swore softly and called Aditi inside. "Can you please cancel my flight to Brazil tomorrow and ask Aditya to on my behalf?"
She nodded, her curiosity doubled when she saw the letter lying in front of him. "Any trouble, sir?" she asked meekly.
A small smile fluttered on his male lips. "No! Just routine stuff, can you get me a black coffee, two sugars, no milk? Please?" he offered the plea as an after thought.
"I know how you like the coffee, sir! I have been with you for the last two years." Her spirited words made him grin.
"Where is my 'Money Penny' today?" the casual affection in his voice was noted with jealousy by Aditi.
"Sir, she took a day off today, said something about an urgent meeting, some family matter." Aditi responded.
Jai flung his head back in surprise, "She doesn't have any family! Are you sure there is nothing wrong with her?"
"I don't know sir, Ms. Sharma doesn't share her issues with me", she was offended with his question and turned her back to go.
"I am sure there is nothing wrong with her, she does have a strong disposition...like a battle ax." He laughed at his own joke.
"If you say so, sir!" Aditi bristled at the discourteous manner with which he referred to her immediate boss.
"I like your loyalty, Aditi! Just make sure that you do not tell the old lady, that you love her, she doesn't take it well!" the serious advice in his voice made her turn her face toward him questioningly. That was the same exact advice that the old lady gave her about him when she gave her the job. She told him that he does not appreciate young women throwing themselves at him and the day she tells him that she is in love with him, she will be out of the company.
"You two deserve each other, sir!" the brave words made him grin one more time.
"No one would take either of us, so we are stuck to each other!" His glib remark made her wonder if he knew the extent of his own charm.
