While the celebration of Christmas has attained egalitarian connotations in the country, the spirit of Christmas does not seem to be reflected with the same zeal in the Hindi films. As a matter of fact songs denoting the festivity spirit of Christmas are not to be heard for quite some time. This is inspite of the fact that there are accomplished players belonging to the Christian community who are literally whose who in the Hindi film genre, but they are also not able to chip in with a song denoting the festive spirit of Christmas.
It is altogether a different matter that one of the most famous representatives from the community Louis Banks has composed an album called Miles from India with which he aspires to strike into the list of nominations in the Grammy's list.
The lack of it sometimes conveys a feeling of emptiness, as the illustrious cousin of the Hindi film music; the Hollywood genre comes out with specially compiled albums for Christmas on yearly basis with astonishing success. When viewed from the perspective that the films earlier used to have the songs devoted to the spirit of festivity of Christmas, the lack of it in the present set up creates a gap of continuity.
While all the famous stars of the era gone by have played the role of a Christian character, it is difficult to find the same being undertaken by the stars of the present times. Salman Khan was probably the only exception and he crooned the songs celebrating the spirit of Christmas in KHAMOSHI and to a limited extent in LOVE as well.
May be, the time for it has come now. For a generation that eats drinks and sleeps music, music is the best possible way in which the spirit of festivity and joy can be explained to a new generation that is coming up. They need to be told about the secular ethos of the country and there is no better manner than music to illustrate it. At a time when the western music is taking ground in the country, it indeed is the opportune moment to pool in the efforts to raise a toast to the spirit of festivity with the modern sensibilities and there could be no better way to do it, but through all the music aficionados who practice the religion of Christianity in particular.
