What you are saying is right. Sheshnaag was defeated by Indrajit in a battle. Thats how he won the heart of Sulochana. Sheshnaag took a vow that he will avenge his defeat at the hands of Indrajit. His vow was fullfilled when he killed Indrajit. In Ramayan, Lakshman is made aware of the fact that Inderjit is infact his son in law after Inderjit's death to which he is a bit dismayed (because Inderjit is his daughters husband) and happy (because he fullfilled his vow). I cannot recollect who informs Lakshman about this history but I remember reading this.

When Indrajit meditated on Brahmaji for immortality, Lord Brahma replied that he could not grant anyone immortality, but he gave Meghnad a boon that only the one who breaks free of/defeats Indrajit three times would be his killer. I thinkLakshmanji only could kill Indrajit, because being defeated/killed by one's father-in-law would not be shameful, and Sesh-Naag probably did not want to bring grief to his daughter in the knowledge that any person killed her husband, so he took birth as Lakshmanji to kill Indrajit. This is just a speculation though...😊
