Christmas Lights
She stood peering through the iron grilles of the large gate at a group of boys pelting each other with snow. Only her face was visible as the rest of seven-year-old frame was wrapped in a large shawl.
Tarun nudged his friend, "Jai, look she is here again." Jai looked towards the gates at two bright eyes starng at them. Tarun picked up a handful of snow and pressed it. "This should get rid of her…stupid kid." And he hurled the snowball in Bani's direction.
The snoball hit the iron bar and splattered on Bani's face. The wet, cold snow sent shiver through her body. She rubbed her face with the shawl and grinned back at Tarun.
"I don't believe it," Tarun exclaimed, "she finds it funny!" As Tarun bent down to pick up some more, Jai stopped him. "Leave her alone. She isn't causing any trouble."
Tarun threw the snow in Jai's face, "Yeah except standing and staring like a banshee." Jai brushed the snow off his face and walked up to the gate. He stared at the small dark eyes looking at him shyly. "Hello!"
Bani just giggled and then ran off in the dark. As Bani came in through the door, she encountered her mother, 'You went out again in the dark. How many time has papa told you not to go out alone in the dark. Where did you go?" Kiran demanded.
Bani took off her shawl and boots. "I went to the school. It is so pretty ma, all those twinkling lights on the tree."
Kiran sighed at Bani's fascination with the Christmas lights decorations at the boarding school. She will have to talk to her husband again.
Later in the night, "Nishi, Bani went out again to the school, to look at the lights. I think may be you should buy some and put them for her. May be she won't go out then."
Nishikant looked up from the book he was reding. "Why didn't you stop her? I don't want her wandering the streets at night."
"I did Nishi, but don't know when she slipped out. She doesn't listen."
Putting the book aside Nishi looked at his wife. "Well one more month and then we will be leaving this place. I will be glad to leave this cold and snow behind."
Kiran smiled at her husband. "Yes, I can't wait to get back to Mt Abu."

"Baniiii…." Kiran shouted from the kitchen.
"I am coming maa." Bani shouted back, as she stuffed her cell phone and purse in her small backpack. She ran down the stairs and into the kitchen and hugged her mother, "Good morning maa." She sat down at the small dining table and drank from the glass of milk.
Kiran put a plate of paratha and sabzi in front of her, "Here eat quickly. You are late. Mr Mehta will be waiting for you."
Bani tore a piece off and put it in her mouth, She chewed it and then took a sip of milk. "Mukeshchacha is used to it now. He won't mind." Bani finished off rest of her paratha and milk and took her leave. Luckily a bus was waiting as she reached the bus stop and she climbed in.
Mukesh glared at Bani as she rushed in. Wheeling himself out from behind the reception desk, he muttered, "Late again."
Bani grinned and bent down and touched his feet, "Sorry chacha."
Mukesh couldn't help smiling. "Get away with you. Now go and take up your duty. Listen, I am expecting a visitor. Mr Walia. Let me know when he comes in."
Bani dumped her pack on the floor under the desk and sat on the chair. "Yes chacha, you told me yesterday. I shall call you as soon he gets here. Where is Pushka rbhaiya? He is not going to be here to see him?"
"Pushkar, is already here. He is in my office." Mukesh answered as he wheeled himself into his office.
After a while Pushkar came out and sat down next to Bani. "Bani, how many rooms booked so far?" Bani looked at the open register and went through. "About six. But its early yet. I am sure we will get few more people before the evening."
Pushkar played with the pen on the desk, "I hope so. I hope we get a few more bookings in the week ahead. It would help with the sale of the hotel. What will you do Bani after the hotel is sold?" he asked.
"Work here, at least I am hoping this Mr Walia will keep me on his payroll. If not then I will find something else. Papa is always bugging me to join his office."
Pushkar leaned back, "May be you should. I am sure you would earn more money than what we pay you."
Bani frowned, "I like this job. I get to talk to people from so many different towns. What about you? What are you going to do?"
"I am going to Mumbai. I want to work for one of the big hotel there. Get some experience and then may be start my own chain of hotel."
Just then the lobby door opened and a tall man in a business suit strolled in. He walked up to the desk, "My name is Jai Walia. I am here to see Mr Mehta."
Bani stared at his dark eyes and sharp features. She blushed and said quickly, "Yes sir, Mr Mehta…just one moment."
Pushkar stood up, "It's ok Bani. I will take him to see dad." Pushkar held his hand out, "Hello Mr Walia. I am Pushkar Mehta, Mr Mehta is my father."
Bani watched the two of them walk into Mr Mehta's office. She wondered why did she felt as if she had seen Mr Walia's face before. He had never been to this hotel before. She shook her thoughts out and then ordered some tea for Mr Mehta and his guest.
Twenty minutes later, she watched Pushkar show Mr Walia around. Mr Mehta came out. "Bani book our best suite for Mr Walia. He will stay the night. And then can you go and see Raju. Tell him to make his special tonight for dinner. You can stay for dinner too Bani if you like."
Bani shook her head, "No chacha. I made plans with my friends. Thanks for asking though." She left at six, after making sure things were taken care of as per Mr Mehta's instruction. She had only seen Jai Walia one more time, when he had asked her for a map of the area. Bani had taken out the rather old map with tattered edge and handed it to him. He had smiled at her as he took it.

3 months later…
Mr Mehta sat in his wheelchair beside Mr Walia and Puskhkar. The handful of staff employed by his hotel stood in front of them, all looking nervous. The news of the hotel being sold to Mr Walia had them all wondering what was going to happen now.
Mr Mehta smiled, "Now all of you don't look so nervous. I just wanted to introduce you all to Mr Walia, who is taking over the hotel. All of you have been doing excellent until now and I hope you will carry on doing the same under Mr Walia. Now I will let Mr Walia take over."
Jai Walia stood up and explained his plan for the hotel to the employees. Bani gazed at him, today he wasn't wearing his suit, but was dressed casual in khakhi pants and black polo shirt. His jet black hair was gelled back neatly. His voice was friendly and he smiled as he told them he was going to keep all of them on the payroll while the hotel was modernized. All of them would be given opportunity to go and receive training at one of his hotel in Mumbai while the hotel was closed for renovations.
After the meeting was over, Bani went and hugged Mukesh, "Chacha I am going to miss you. I hope you are not going away with Pushkar."
Mukesh smiled, "No Bani I will be right here. Mr Walia wants me to stay around for few months and help out the new manager when the hotel reopens." Pushkar pulled her hair, "I am going to miss you. Who will I play rummy with when I am bored?"
Bani giggled, "I am sure you will find lots of pretty girls to play rummy with in Mumbai. In fact I think chacha you should marry this budhu off before he goes…don't know what kind of girl he bring back your bahu."
Pushkar laughed, "No way I am getting married to someone daddy likes. I will find my own girl."
Jai Walia came up catching end of the conversation. "Who is looking for a girl?"
"No one Mr Walia…just teasing Bani."
Jai fixed his eyes on Bani, "I hope Bani you are planning to continue working with me."
Mr Mehta patted Bani's arm, "You will stay won't you Bani? I going to need her help when Pushkar is gone."
"Good, I think you should get some management training Bani…Mr Mehta tells me you have been working for three years for him now. I think you are ready for some more responsibility."
Pushkar hugged her, "Wow…congrats Bani. A promotion."
"Right you two, you are still on duty. Get back to work." Mr Mehta told them, aware of Mr Walia still standing around.

Kiran helped Bani put on a sari, it was one of hers, a dark pink chiffon with light silver embroidery. She pinned the pallu for Bani and then smiled, "There you look pretty. Now what are you going to do with your hair?" Kiran aksed.
Bani looked at herself in the mirror. She felt strange wearing a sari for the first time. "Huh…I guess leave it loose. Maa…I feel weird."
Kiran patted her cheek, "That is because you are wearing a sari for the first time. You will get used to it. Now you better get along. You don't want to be late."
Bani picked up her purse and smiled. "Are you going to come later? It's open house, you can look around the hotel."
"Well depends on how early your papa gets home."
"Ok. Bye maa."
Bani stood outside and gazed at the hotel all lit up with lights. The renovated hotel has been open for a month now. Mr Walia had decided to have an open house so that people can come and see the changes. Bani had been put in charge of organizing the night.
Now as she looked at the sparkling lights she felt good. Inside the hotel had a complete facelift. The dcor was rich and vibrant. The guest rooms all decorated in warm colours and all the furniture replaced with traditionally styled teak wood. On the roof top a terrace restaurant had been added.
A man came and stood beside Bani. "looks very pretty." He commented softly. Bani looked at him. At six foot he towered over her. He was dressed in a casual suit, shirt and no tie. His hair glistened with gold brown tones and his grey eyes had teasing look in them. The man was staring at her face.
Bani blushed. "Excuse me, I have to go." She said.
The man held her arm lightly, "At least tell me your name miss. My name is Tarun Sablok…Mr Walia's friend from Mumbai."
Bani turnd and looked at him shyly. "Bani Dixit…nice to meet you Mr Sablok."
"It's Tarun dear. Hope I get to see you again Bani."
Bani hurried on inside. She looked around for Mr Walia, but he wasn't anywhere around. Bani went into the office and stowed her purse in the desk drawer. The door opened and Jai Walia looked at her, "Oh there you are Bani. Could you go up the terrace restaurant and keep an eye there. I will hand around here in the lobby."
"Sure Mr Walia." Bani hurried up to the restaurant and walked around talking to people looking around and sampling food laid out on the buffet table.
A voice whispered close to her ear, "You know I am sure I have seen you somewhere before Bani." Bani looked at Tarun staring at her thoughtfully. "I don't usually forget a pretty face, but for some reason I can't remember where we have met before."
"I think you must be mistaking me for someone else Mr Sablok." Bani replied.
"No…it's your eyes…very beautiful. It will come to me. Can I get you a drink Bani?" he asked.
"No thank you. I am on duty."
Tarun arched his brow, "I will have to have a word with Jai. Making someone pretty like you work tonight. So what do you do Bani? I hope Jai Walia does make you a workaholic too, like him."
Bani laughed and brushed her hair back, "I am afraid to say you are wrong Mr Sablok. Mr Walia had been anything put a generous employer. I am assistant manager of the hotel."
Tarun held her arm gently, "Come and explain to me all this exotic food on table. And you can call me Tarun…Mr Sablok makes me sound like a old man."
He couldn't help but watch her as she giggled, she looked damn cute, he thought. She wandered around the buffet table, explaining to him some of the regional and international dishes.
"Ah there you are. Should have known you would be with one of the prettiest girl here tonight." Jai said as he slapped Tarun lightly on the back.
Tarun grinned, "Right you are. What did you expect? You are too busy showing your hotel off. Bani here have been keeping me company."
Jai shifted his eyes over to Bani, who blushed.
"Ahem…Jai. I am sure I have seen Bani somewhere before. Do you remember where it could be?"
'No…I bet you say that to all the girl. Bani don't fall for him. He is biggest cassanova in town."
Bani face turned red. Tarun threw a glare at Jai, "Don't paint a wrong picture of me buddy. Bani ignore him. Just because I like the company of beautiful women…and just you that you know, I am very sure. I have seen her before…it's her eyes. They are very mesmerizing." Saying Tarun locked eyes with Bani.
Jai coughed, "If you done with hogging my manager. I want to take her away for a while."
Tarun looked away and sighed deeply. "Spoilsport! See you later Bani. And don't fall for his charms…save yourself for me."
Bani didn't know where to look. She had never met anyone like Tarun before. She stood up and walked away with Jai Walia. Tarun sat sipping his drink and drumming his memory for any clue where he had seen her before.
Close to midnight, the stragglers had left the hotel. Bani went around and supervised the cleanup. There were few guests staying in the hotel and wanted to make sure the place would be clean and tidy for next day.
Bani grabbed her purse from the desk and bid the goodnight at the reception and left.
Outside Tarun and Jai were standing and talking. Seeing her Tarun called out, "Bani how are you getting home?"
Bani walked towards them, "I am going to take a taxi."
"Oh no you don't. Why don't I drive you?" Tarun offered.
Bani looked hesitantly at him. She wasn't sure, she liked him but after all the things he had said earlier, she was feeling uneasy. Tarun saw the hesitance in her eyes. "I don't take advantage of girls Bani, if that is what you are afraid of."
She looked away, "I wasn't thinking like that Mr Sablok. It's late and you don't know the town very well, how will get back to the hotel? It is better if I take a taxi."
"Why don't I come along?" Jai offered, "I know the most of the roads now."
Bani breathed deeply, she was tired and wanted to get home now. She looked gratefully at Jai, her deep brown eyes resting on Jai's face. "Thank you."
Tarun slapped his leg and shouted, "Now I know where I saw you before."
"Jai…Shimla…remember the school…the girl who used to look at us playing in the snow. It's her…can't mistake those eyes. Oh boy, I wish there was snow here. You were quite cheeky miss."
Bani looked embarrassed. "That was a long time ago. And I was small, I remember going to the school to look at the Christmas lights."
Jai scratched his head, "Really. That was you. How come I didn't remember?"
Tarun took his keys out of the pocket and gave Jai a cheeky grin, "That's cause you don't know how to appreciate beauty."

Tarun left the next day and Bani felt relieved. Bani went about doing her job as normal. They were getting busy, the numbers of room bookings had increased. Mr Mehta would pop in for a couple of hours and go over things with Bani and the new manager Satish. He was pleased Bani was managing her new duties so well. They were sitting during her break having coffee when Mr Mehta told her, "Bani I am going away for few weeks to Mumbai. Pushkar has brought a flat and wants me to come over. Thought I would go now since things are going well here."
Bani looked at him sadly, "I will miss you chacha. It won't be the same. I will miss our little talks."
Mr Mehta squeezed her hand, "I shall miss you too Bani. You are like a daughter to me. Pushkar misses you too. He always asks about you when he calls."
Bani's eyes watered a little, "I miss him too."
"Bani…I think may be Mr Walia wants you. Look he is looking at you." Mr Mehta said quietly. Bani coloured, she had notice Jai Walia staring at her from time to time. Ever since that night when he and Tarun had drove her home, he seemed to be look at her in deep thought.
Bani stood up and walked towards Jai. "Hello Mr Walia. Is there something that I can do for you?" She asked.
Jai smiled, "No Bani. I am sorry I didn't mean to cut short your break."
Bani shrugged, "Don't worry, I was done anyway. Excuse me Mr Walia, I better get back to my office."
Jai Walia watched her walking away. He still couldn't believe she was the little girl who had smiled at him shyly and run away. He had been eighteen and she can't have been more than seven or eight. He was going to turn thirty-four soon, how quickly time had flown by. He remembered his conversation with Tarun in the car.
"I can't believe that same little girl has turned into such a gorgeous girl." Tarun had said. "If I wasn't engaged to Leena, I would definitely be serious about her." Jai had looked at the wistful look in his friend's eye, but didn't feel sorry for him.
"What about you Jai? Why are you so quiet? Don't you find her attractive?" Tarun had asked.
Jai gave him a blank look, "I guess…I think she is nice looking. She is my employee."
