Aamir's stepbrother: I want to prove myself
Hyder Ali Khan (27) was recently cast in Ranjeet Sharma's Deepa Ki Tarannum, based on the infamous bar dancer's life, with Pretti Jaiin. DETERMINED To MAKE IT:
Hyder Ali Khan
Hyder is Aamir Khan's stepbrother — the son of Tahir Hussain's second wife. We chat with the newest Khan on the block…
Low profile
Why has he kept a low profile till now? "I have deliberately maintained a low profile, as I felt I wanted to do something to prove myself and establish my identity. I don't want to be known as a celebrity's son or brother. Also, I want to make it on my own, without abbajaan (Tahir Hussain) or Aamir's help. I wanted to do the right script, in the right film, in the right way.
I wanted to be a model and was looking for the right break when I received an offer to act in Deepa Ki Tarannum. It was a challenging role and the character sketch is good; I play Tarannum's lover, who makes her fall in love with him and then manipulates her."
Production work
What was he doing before this? "I was working in abbajaan's home production, Dil Dhoondta Hai, as assistant director and executive producer. The film is complete and will be released next January."
Weren't there financial problems, as a result of which the film was delayed? "Yes, but these things happen when you have a new cast. Everything has its ups and downs. Today, abbajaan is coming back in a big way. After the release of Dil Dhoondta Hai, he will start Dil Tujhpe Qurban (with me) and another new film."
What kind of relationship does he share with Tahir Hussain? "Great! I respect him tremendously; he has made some wonderful films. He was very happy when I signed Deepa Ki Tarannum, and congratulated me. Abbajaan is very strict and disciplined as a producer, and doesn't allow any liberties just because I am his son. Once, he fired me because I had come late to his office."
On his brothers... ACTOR JODI: Hyder with wife,
TV actress Eva Grover
And stepbrothers Aamir and Faisal? "I haven't spoken to Aamir about it. Aamir, Faisal and I are three very individualistic people, who don't interfere in each other's personal and professional lives. We meet and talk, but we are all different and don't disturb each other.
Aamir is a wonderful person, a sober human being, very principled, hardworking and sincere — an inspiration to all newcomers. I admire him for the way he's worked hard and brought up the whole family. I want to make a mark on my own. The choices should be mine to make. Faisal is doing great. In fact, very shortly, he will be starting a business of his own."
So, will he attend Aamir's wedding later this month? "No comments," says Hyder.
Married or single?
Is he single? "No, I am married to TV actress Eva Grover, who is currently acting in Shararat. We met more than a year ago, through a common friend, and on the 18th day, decided to get married. We celebrated our first wedding anniversary on November 29 this year. She's a very nice girl, very homely, and professional about her career. She gets along wonderfully with my family and is also helping my sister, Nazeen, in her designing business."
What kind of roles is Hyder looking for? "Performance-oriented roles, which don't only involve singing and dancing. My favorite films are abbajaan's Karvaa and Sanjay Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam."
