| The attacks on Mumbai took their toll on Bollywood as well. Actor Ashish Chaudhary, who recently starred alongside Sanjay Dutt in EMI, lost his sister, Monica Chhabaria, and her husband. They were dining at the Oberoi Trident Hotel when the terrorists struck. Bheja Fry actress Bhairavi Gos wami left a party with friends at the Oberoi after an argument with one of them. The rest of her group of seven were not as lucky, as an hour later the first attacks occurr ed and only one of them survived. Others were luckier. Bipasha Basu was travelling on the Vile Parle highway two minutes after explosions rocked the area. Bips was frantic with worry about boy friend John Abraham's aunt, who was on duty at the Taj Mahal Hotel. To her relief, the aunt returned safely at 7am the next day. Arshad Warsi passed the same Vile Parle site 15 minutes before the attack. "Nothing can stop Mumbai residents from getting back to normal, but we need to ex ercise more caution," he said. Director Vishal Bhardwaj was shooting Kaminey, starring Shahid Kapur, in Colaba, just minutes away from the Taj and Oberoi hotels. As soon as trouble started, his unit was advised to leave. Celina Jaitley was at the Four Seasons Hotel in Worli when the attacks began. Her party stayed close to the exits until 3am before eventually retiring to their rooms. Youngster Sammir Dattani had a table booked for a party of six at the Oberoi for dinner. He was within minutes of the venue when he decided to skip it, as he had an early-morning flight. Just as he and his friends turned to leave, a loud explosion went off in the hotel and "all hell broke loose, so we quickly drove off". Raveena Tandon was dining at a restaurant in south Mumbai when she got calls to leave immediately. She said: "It's time the corrupt politicians woke up. Stop thinking of your voter banks and think of what's happening to our country." Writing on his blog, Aamir Khan expressed concern that poli ticians would try to use the situ ation to their advantage. "At least now they should learn to not divide people and, instead, become responsible leaders. When will they realise that terrorists have no religion? Terrorists are not Hindu or Muslim or Christian. They are not people of religion or God. They are sick in their heads and have to be dealt with in that manner," he said. He signed off with the words "Jai Hind" (Victory to India). The Big B called off a planned appearance at former US president Bill Clinton's Global Initiative in Hong Kong on Monday to show solidarity with Mumbaikers. He also cancelled his participation this weekend in Live Earth, the Al Gore initiative, saying: "I am not going to sing and dance when my country and city bleeds." Director Anurag Kashyap, whose Black Friday dealt with the 1993 Mumbai blasts, said: "It seems unreal to me, almost like a film. Mumbai will bounce back, but it has been hurt badly and it will take time to heal." Lyricist and scriptwriter Javed Akhtar appealed for unity while demanding action. "It is time to stand united behind our security forces and flush out these culprits," he said. Abbas Tyrewala, the director of Jaane Tu..., said the response to the attacks within his own Muslim community had demonstrated that every right-thinking Indian Muslim denounced terrorism. Actor Irffan Khan, who led the cast of Mumbai Meri Jaan, which focused on the city's train bomb blasts, felt that things would only change "if we find the root cause of the problem". Hema Malini praised Mumbai's police officers, saying, "I think they rose to the occasion. It is sad that we lost some brave officers. It worries me that Mumbai has become so unsafe. We desperately need more security." Shilpa Shetty described the events as "open war against humanity". She added: "It makes me sad and angry that Mumbai resi dents are soft targets for such attacks. It's an unsettling feeling, especially since we do not seem to be equipped to deal with it." The attacks also took the sheen off the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), held annually in Goa. All festivities around the event, including a live concert featuring Kavita Krishnamurthy and Sonu Nigam, were cancelled. Anupam Kher's close friend, Karambir Kang, GM of the Taj Mahal, lost his wife and two children in the fire that engulfed the hotel. Kher blamed inadequate intelligence-gathering for the recurrent attacks on the city, saying, "If, after 9/11, America has made sure no such incident happens, why do we continue to have 9/11s? It's a failure of intelligence. How did so many terrorists enter Mumbai with so much sophisticated weap onry? What the government is doing is insufficient." K Balachander's production company, Kavidhaalaya, is on the lookout for a good script and director for a planned venture with Kamalhassan. The production company is run by Balachander's daughter, Pushpa Kanda samy, and his son-in-law. It was Kandasamy's idea to market Raj nikanth's Muthu in Japan, a move that reaped handsome dividends. Now he feels that it is time to mar ket Kamalhassan to a much wider audience. Both Rajnikanth and Kamalhassan regard Balachander as their guru and mentor, and Kamalhassan is eager to accept a role if the story is good. Meanwhile, ill health has not deterred Balachander from proceeding with his acting role in Rettai Suzhi, in which he shares the screen with another trail-blazing director, Bharathiraja. Filming began on Wednesday and will continue its first schedule until December 23, weather permitting. Now that Cyclone Nisha has moved away, director Thamira is anxious to get the first schedule off the ground. After cameo roles in Punna gai Poove and Saroja, ace music composer Yuvanshanker Raja is to play a major acting role in Venkat Prabhu's forthcoming film Goa. The movie is a joint venture by Soundarya Rajnikanth's Ocher Studios and Hollywood's Warner Brothers. Stunt director Peter Hayne, who made his Tamil debut in Gou tham Vasudeva Menon's debut film, Minnale, is set to direct a film filled with kung-fu fight sequences and Hollywood-style car chases. Aarya's brother, Sathya, is to make his acting debut in Kaadhal 2 Kalyaanam, to be directed by Mi lind, a former assistant of Manirathinam. Sundar C's ego seems to have run out of control. After announcing that he planned to star in a re make of MGR's Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban, he declared he would play the lead role in a remake of Rajnikanth's Murattu Kaallai. Having just completed a film opposite Nadhiya, Sundar C's next film, Ayndhaam Padai, will see him opposite two leading ladies, Devayaani and Simran. Two South African-born brothers will make their acting debuts in Thanthi. Shooting has just been completed and the film is slated for release early in 2009.
