Over the years, Bollywood has given some of the best romantic movies. I am a fan of Bollywood romantic movies. I grew up watching many of them and even today, I enjoy these movies very much. I remember, after watching Madhuri Dixit in Saajan, I had a huge crash over her. For the next six months, I only thought of her. In 1995, when I saw Kajol in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, I just fell for her innocent face and beautiful smile. I guess, many of you had the same effect watching these movies. Today, when I watch them I just think of those days and smile.
Hum Aapke Hain Kaun:
Hum Aapke Hain Kaun..! is one of the all time classics of Hindi cinema. Interestingly, this three hours twenty six minutes long movie does not have a serious complicated story. Nisha (Madhuri Dixit) and Prem (Salman Khan) are from two families. They fall in love but before they could tell every body Nisha's elder sister, who is married to Prem's elder brother, dies and then their family decides to marry Nisha and Prem's elder brother. For the happiness of their families, the two lovers decide to sacrifice their love. The movie ends when Prem's elder brother comes to know about their relationship and the two families give their consent to their wedding. There are fourteen songs in the movie and Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit gave one of their best performances in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun..!.
Maine Pyar Kiya:
This is the most successful movie of 1989 and established Salman Khan in the Indian film industry. It is also one of the most successful movies of all time. Salman Khan is one of those rare breed of actors who become movie stars overnight with their debut movies. Maine Pyar Kiya tells a story which has been told on the Indian silver screen umpteen times- the struggle between love and money where love finally wins over money. Karan and Kishan are two friends. A poor car mechanic, Karan is a widow and has one daughter, Suman (Bhagyashree). Kishan on the contrary, is a big businessman and Prem (Salman Khan) is his only son. Initially, Prem and Suman were platonic friends but eventually, they fall in love with each other which Prem's father could not approve of. For his love, Prem leaves his family and starts living the life of an ordinary fellow and does all kinds of hardships. In the end, the lovers' struggle becomes successful.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai:
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is the debut movie of director Karan Johar. The success of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai turned him into one of the top movie makers in Bollywood. The movie is influential in many ways. It started a new fashion trend in the Indian cinema. Another major factor is the treatment of the dancers who danced behind the actors and actresses. Previously, these people were not given much importance but this movie changed that idea. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is the story of Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali (Kajol). They studied at St. Xavier's College and were best friends. Then Tina (Rani Mukherjee), comes to study there and Rahul falls for her. Anjali then understood that he actually loved Rahul but she could not tell him. Rahul and Tina get married. Tina gives birth to a daughter but she dies during her child birth. Before death, Tina wrote eight letters to her daughter, whose name is also Anjali. In the last letter, she tells her daughter to unite her father with Anjali, his college mate.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge:
This is the biggest hit of Bollywood in 1995. The movie is also special for another reason. It tells the love story of non-residential- Indians and highlights the Indian cultures and values. The story takes place far away from India; in England. Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran (Kajol) are young second generation Indians born and brought up in London. Raj's father is a rich businessman and he has spoiled his son with all the comforts. On the contrary, Simran's father is a very traditional man. Simran and Raj meet each other when they went on Europe tour with their friends. In the beginning, they do not like each other but eventually they become close and as the tour comes to an end, they understands that they are in love. Simran's father decides to sell his property and go to India where Simran will be married to his friend's son, Kuljeet. Simran's mother is against this marriage but she could not stand up for her daughter. Raj then comes to Punjab and manages to befriend with Kuljeet. In this way, he comes close to Simran. In the end, Simran's father agrees that Raj is the ideal partner for Simran.
Aashiqui:
As I have mentioned earlier that there were some actors who become movie stars over night, this movie is another example. Released in 1990, Aashiqui is a romantic love story between a young boy Rahul (Rahul Roy) and Anu Verghese (Anu Agarwal). They are two suffering souls: Rahul's father is a rich businessman who married another woman divorcing his mother and Anu is an orphan girl. They first meet in a police station and fall in love with each other instantly. The movie tells the story of the two lovers. Ashiqui was a huge success and the songs of the movie were also very popular. Singer Kumar Sanu and Anuradha Paudwal became very famous after this album was released. Rahul Roy became very popular among girls. He also started this new hair-cut style which became popular as 'Rahul Roy haircut.'
Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa:
Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa is one of the major movies in Shah Rukh Khan's career. Even Shah Rukh himself admits that it is his best performance till date. Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa is a love triangle between Sunil (Shah Rukh Khan), Anna (Suchitra Krishnamoorthy), and Chris (Deepak Tijori). Sunil wants to become a musician and he sings for a band. Sunil loves Anna but Anna loves Chris. Still, Sunil tries hard to win Anna's heart. In the meantime, Chris's parents do not want Chris to marry Anna which upsets her and she decides to marry Sunil. Sunil then discovers that Anna is still in love with Chris. The movie shows how Sunil handles this dilemma. Released in 1993, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa was a major hit movie of that year.
Qayamat se Qayamat Tak:
You can call Qayamat se Qayamat Tak the Indian version of Romeo and Juliet. The movie propelled both Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla's career. Raj (Aamir Khan) and Rashmi (Juhi Chawla) belong to two influential families whose rivalry goes back to a long way. Raj's father went to jail on the charge of murdering Rashmi's uncle. Raj sees Rashmi in her village for the first time and deeply falls in love. The two meet again in a tour where Raj saves her from a group of scoundrels. When Rashmi's father comes to know about their relationship, he decides to marry her with someone else. On the night of Rashmi's wedding, Raj and Rashmi elope and goes to a small village where they start their married life. When Rashmi's father comes to know about their whereabouts, he sends henchman to kill Raj but they kill Rashmi instead. Raj can not bear Rashmi's death and commits suicide.
