Every step you take, every move you make... we'll be watchin' you. Have altered the lines of a famous song. For, this one's applicable for Subhash Ghai, a proficient storyteller, one of the most successful stories from this side of the Atlantic. Irrespective of how his films are received at the ticket window, Ghai's movies are always under scrutiny. You watch every film with a magnifying glass.

YUVVRAAJ is no exception!

Write your own movie review of Yuvvraaj
Ghai's forte has been drama. Recall the dramatic moments in KARZ, VIDHAATA, MERI JUNG, RAM LAKHAN, KARMA, SAUDAGAR. He re-visits the genre with YUVVRAAJ. Besides, YUVVRAAJ is his most opulent work thus far. It has a sweeping effect, the film makes a stunning visual statement.
Honestly, YUVVRAAJ isn't Ghai's best work, but post YAADEIN, KISNA and BLACK & WHITE, YUVVRAAJ salvages him, even redeems the storyteller.

The story [Ghai] mirrors a universal truth. Greed leads to disputes and in turn, ruins all relationships. A fact you've heard or witnessed time and again in real life. While the story is captivating, the screenplay doesn't really do justice to the thought. Also, Rahman's music acts as a soothing balm, but the problem is, it takes time to grow on the listener. And that could be a deterrent.

Yet, in all fairness, YUVVRAAJ is a notch above the commonplace. If you intend spending your hard-earned money on it or devoting 3 hours of your precious time on Ghai's new outing, chances are you won't regret it.

Deven Yuvvraaj [Salman Khan] is a chorus singer, in love with Anushka [Katrina Kaif]. Her father Dr. Banton [Boman Irani], however, is dead against this relationship. Things take a turn when Deven's father passes away and he returns to London to stake claim on his father's wealth.

He meets his two estranged brothers Gyanesh Yuvvraaj [Anil Kapoor] and Danny Yuvvraaj [Zayed Khan] after almost twelve years. But things aren't hunky-dory between them...

Ghai has an eye for visuals and every frame of YUVVRAAJ seems like a painting on celluloid. Unmistakably, that's the first thing you notice as YUVVRAAJ unfolds.

It takes time to absorb YUVVRAAJ. In fact, Ghai doesn't open all his cards at the very outset. It's only when the father [Javed Shaikh] passes away and Mithun Chakraborty, the Executor of the Will, enters the scene that the wheels start moving.

The film gathers momentum after the interval. If the first hour has a few by-now-famous Ghai scenes, the second hour sees Ghai in form, with a number of sequences staying in your memory. The penultimate 20-25 minutes are the best. Watch Anil go through the handycam with disbelief, watch Anil and Salman's act during the concert, watch Salman's emotional outburst towards the end... also the titles [brings back memories of OM SHANTI OM].

On the flip side, the screenplay is erratic. There're constant highs and lows in this journey, the film works in patches. In fact, the screenplay falls prey to predictability and mediocrity at places.

Ghai handles the dramatic scenes with flourish. Rahman's music is soothing, but you expect more because Ghai's movies are embellished with lilting music that you recall even after 2 or 3 decades. Kabir Lal captures the striking beauty of Europe well. The output is superb. The sets [Omung Kumar] are truly majestic.

YUVVRAAJ belongs to Anil Kapoor, who towers above the entire cast and delivers a natural, believable performance. Salman's looks are inconsistent. At times the boyish look is intact, at times he looks bloated. Ditto for his hairstyle. His performance, however, is better, mainly towards the finale. Zayed tries hard and convinces in a few scenes. Mithun Chakraborty is fantastic in a brief role.

Katrina looks angelic. Despite the focus being on the three men, she registers an impact. Boman Irani is credible, especially in the scene when he steps out of the Operation Theatre towards the end. Aushima Sawhney is confident. Anjan Srivastava and the pack of villains/vamps look straight out of RAM LAKHAN and TAAL.

On the whole, YUVVRAAJ is interesting in parts, with the penultimate 20/25 minutes taking the film to an all-time high. At the box-office, the package [a mammoth cast, Subhash Ghai, A.R. Rahman, the stunning locales of Europe] should ensure a hearty opening and with no major opposition in the forthcoming week, it should keep its investors smiling.

Yuvvraaj - What a waste!

The first half of Yuvvraaj is bad and the second half only gets worse. It seems like Subhash Ghai is stuck in time just like Rajshri Films are. While most of Rajshri's movies look dated and have the same story, SG's films also have the same typical storylines and drag needlessly. The only difference is that SG's films are shot on a lavish scale.

Coming to Yuvvraaj, there are 3 estranged brothers: autistic and musically gifted Gyaanesh (Anil Kapoor), singing lover boy cum smarty pants Deven (Salman Khan) and brat Danny (Zayed Khan) who loves to gamble, fly airplanes and make out with his chick Shazia (Amrit Maghera). Their father dies leaving all the riches to Gyaanesh. So Deven returns to the family home and hatches a plan with Danny to con Gyaanesh and obtain a nice chunk of the property. He needs money to marry lady love Anushka (Katrina Kaif) as her father (Boman Irani) wants his son-in-law to be super rich.

First the good stuff. Austria looks heavenly and very picturesque. The production values are first rate right from Salman's house to Anil's bedroom and Katrina's mansion.Katrina looks breathtaking and picture perfect. Performance wise, she only flutters her eyelashes and flashes that dazzling smile. Her Hindi is unconvincing because we haven't heard her speaking Hindi off-screen. Anil Kapoor is the only one acting in the movie and delivers an innocent performance, just like his character. Zayed Khan is just playing himself but there is too much make up on his face. Good for him, most of his dialogues are in English. Amrit Maghera does nothing but make out with Zayed.

Salman Khan plays his funny and spontaneous self most of the time and a lot of the dialogues in the first half remind of you of Salman, not of Deven, and he even makes fun of Anushka's Hindi. Salman and Katrina's chemistry is natural. Salman looks super stylish and handsome except when he is crying.

The melodious music and background score make the movie slightly tolerable and will make more money than the movie. Shiamak Davar's choreography is spectacular, especially Mastam Mastam.

Boman and Mithun are wasted but then the entire movie is a waste of time, money, acting and music.

Now the bad stuff: the dialogues are extremely tacky. Here are samples: Have beer and get near to those who are dear, well done my son abhi toh done done baaki hai, Tum Gyaanesh to ghumaao, pilaao, khilaao phir mujhe bataao apne gale ka haal. Mithun's dialogue about united families in the end sounds like an ad for an insurance company. Pathetic!

Then there is the cleavage flashing bitchy bhabhi played by Aparna Kumar. Like Yaadien and Pardes, there are plenty of mean characters loitering in Yuvvraaj too, like the blue-lens sporting mama, the purple haired mami and her useless sons. All of them are after the money.

And all the characters use the loudspeaker mode of their phones. I don't know any real person who does.

Even the change in the attitudes of Salman and Zayed towards Anil is not well depicted. The scene where Zayed is asking for a lift and starts shouting in Hindi is plain silly - I'm still laughing at it.

The pace is very slow. None of the scenes make an impact and thank god the movie is not three hours long. There is only one man to be blamed for the non-existent direction, the lack of editing and the shoddy script: Subhash Ghai.

Yuvvraaj is that kind of a movie where you wait for things to happen but the movie ends without making an impact so you go home disappointed.

Yuvvraaj Movie Review
Yuvvraaj - Magnificent comeback by Ghai
IndiaGlitz [Friday, November 21, 2008]

Bollywood's once-heralded auteur jolted with his previous flops 'Yaadein', 'Kisna' and 'Black & White' is back with a yarn-spinning tale of emotions. Perhaps, ennoble Yuvvrraj – 'The Returns of Ghai in Town' and it's a directorial of finesse savoring to family audiences. On the pars, producers (Subash Ghai himself and Eros International) shore onto grounds of non-speculation with such superstars on the crew-list. Yup! Subash Ghai treads smart as a whip on posing over-the-top performers and roping crme de la crme technicians. Well, Salman-Katrina the sensational couple, Anil Kapoor's former combo hits with Subash, Modern-day Mozart A.R. Rahman tuning in melodies to Gulzar's lyrics and host of the visual fiestas cinematographer Kabir Lal canning exotic locales of Europe. And just pull your imaginations on these combos travailing on best notes for a beau idal rendered by this virtuoso of all times.

On the grounds of reality, Yuvvraaj isn't the best as his classics Karz, Vidhaata and more. But, one fine rigid reason that lets everyone sing appraisals is the fact that your eyes doesn't take off from the screens for complete 180mins. As Subash himself utters, the film merely carries off with traces on his yesteryear classic 'Ram Lakhan' (theme of brotherly love). Not alone on emotions, the flick has moral on greed leads to wreck and precisely, something we got to learn at our Kinder Garden levels. On this screen, greediness eclipses all over and latter half it's all about reveling emotional relationships that diminishes the vicious elements.

Placed at the exotic backdrops of Austria, Deven Yuvvraaj (Salman Khan) and Anushka (Katrina Kaif) are in love and as clichd; her father Dr. Banton (Boman Irani) obstructs their relationship. On the initial stages, it's between Deven-Banton and scenario shifts onto different vistas as Deven's father lasts his breath in London. Not for affection and paying homage, Deven gets back to his hometown seeking for shares in father's wealth. Over there, he encounters his unloved brothers Gyanesh Yuvvraaj (Anil Kapoor) and Danny Yuvvraaj (Zayed Khan).

Gyanesh Yuvvraaj possessing autism from his childhood goes the apple-of-eye for everyone in the family, once attorney-close friend of his father (Mithun Chakraborthy) reveals that entire property is favored on him. Not alone Deven and Danny, but other relatives sham themselves to be good with their opprobrious inner evil intentions.

What makes the film so colossally spectacular? Undoubtedly, it's melodious tunes of Rahman and Kabir Lal's visualizing of emblazoned locations. Moreover, on-screen actors performing a different show with their distinct roles surmount your prospects. It's a complete show by Anil Kapoor and this man transfixes your with his simpatico-kind-of-role. Be it his mirthful encounters with Salman or the emotional outbreak in the penultimate, he overshadows everyone and each prop in the frame. Don't miss his fabulous gestures after watching handycam in the climax. Hats off to Subash Ghai! His genuineness of inserting symbolic representation where Anil Kapoor breaks the masks on table after viewing handycam is superb. Of course, the song 'Dil Ka Rishta' following this sequence as broken mask at backdrops of stage. It's something you call 'Director's cut'. A new dawn and a great break for Zayed Khan and let him thank Subash for it. Hope, directors watch out for his performance offering him best roles in future. With her cherubic looks and decent performance, Katrina Kaif steals the show and watching her play cello, it looks realistic. No wonder in appreciating her looks alike of Princess Diana at certain parts. Boman Irani pulls your attention with his laudable performance in all contexts, especially in the climax. Aushima Sawhney sways with finesse and ditto to Anjan Srivastava as antagonist. Salman Khan establishes a perfect room with his pleasing act on all scenarios till the final credits (similar to Om Shanthi Om).

On narration, Yuvvraaj doesn't start off with a gripping screenplay and perhaps, it's merely bits-n-pieces of lad and missy in love and father opposing their relations. Well, things shift on paradigms once Mithun Chakraborthy appears on the screen and unravels a great surprise amongst other characters. Few flaws of uninteresting parts may be spotted in the first half and everything goes diminished in the penultimate of 20-25mins binding your hearts, soaking eyes with tears and sparkling your lips with smiles. It's very rare amongst auteurs blending different emotions within short durations and Subash Ghai deserves grand appreciations for it.

Rahman's musical score is refreshing with 'Tu Hi Meri Dost' and 'Dil Ka Rishta'. Merely, visualizations could have been better for 'Tu Hi Meri Dost' as he could've avoided Computer Generated works. Background score works well, especially where Salman reveals his inner intentions to Anil Kapoor after sipping drinks and penultimate sequences are top-notching. Kabir Lal's cinematography mesmerizes everyone and his enchanting shots of European locales goes in-hand with Rahman's musical. It's a billion dollar question why Subash Ghai had to pass-scenes while characters drive car on such beautiful locales.

As a whole, Yuvvraaj is splendiferous in all parts with exceptional performance by all and it's a perfect family entertainer. With previous week's releases gradually getting down on charts and no big releases awaited couple of weeks ahead, Subash Ghai can host a lavish party for the entire team as collections are sure to brim over producers' sacs. Of course, A.R. Rahman should be ready tuning rock-blast party songs for his successful venture with Subash Ghai and so would be performers.

Verdict: Relishing best emotions on screen

Review: Subhash Ghai's 'Yuvvraaj' is old wine in new bottle

Pratik Dogra

New Delhi, Nov 21: 'Independent we may live…but united we stand' is Subhash Ghai's take on the aesthetics of an ideal joint family in modern times. His school of film-making involves a simple story, told with great grandeur and pomp. And his latest opulent extravaganza – 'Yuvvraaj' happens to be no different.

The story of 'Yuvvraaj' is about the circumstances that lead to coming together of three estranged brothers after their father's death. The plot revolves around Deven Yuvvraaj, played by Salman Khan. He is a choir singer in Prague, who was disowned by his father due to the sibling rivalry he shared with his mentally challenged elder brother, Gyanesh (Anil Kapoor).

He is in love with Anoushka (Katrina Kaif), daughter of an affluent doctor, Dr Banton (Boman Irani). But Dr Banton refuses to accept him as his son-in-law due to his poor finances. Consequently, Dev signs an agreement with Dr Banton that if he becomes a billionaire in 40 days, he could marry his daughter.

An emotional roller coaster journey awaits Dev as he sets off to London on his mission to inherit his share from his, now dead, father's Rs 15000 crore property. On reaching, he realises that there's nothing left for him in his father's will as all the wealth has been given to Gyanesh. He then plans, schemes and conspires with his younger brother Danny (Zayed Khan), who he meets after 12 years, to wrest the millions from Gyanesh.

But subsequent chain of events make the three brothers rekindle their affections for each other and make them understand the significance of family bonds. United by love, the brothers fight a plethora of greedy relatives and fulfill their father's last wish of his family being a united joint family.

The movie rides high on performances, especially from Anil Kapoor and Salman Khan. The duo is in great form and share some excellent moments of brotherly bonding on screen. Katrina Kaif surprisingly, is required to act…and more surprisingly, delivers! Besides looking gorgeous, she makes a convincing cello player, while her sizzling on-screen pairing with Salman is one of the high points of the film.

Boman Irani, as usual, is effortless in his brilliance, while Zayed Khan is passable. The supporting cast does well without being spectacular.

But, however good the performances be, a musical extravaganza like 'Yuvvraaj' depends heavily on its musical score and that's where the AR Rehman-Gulzar team falters by a few notches. The music, which happens to be the soul of the movie, often fails to captivate and nor does it always integrate with the plot. Other than the 'dost' track, none of the numbers linger, which is surprising coming from AR Rehman.

Another drawback of this magnum opus is it's outdated narrative. The movie slackens now and then, while the script, too, has a few loose ends.

However, the cinematic beauty of the movie does cover-up inherent deficiencies in the movie to an extent. The exotic locales of Prague and Austria are captured in splendid hues, which bring freshness to the movie.

All in all, while Yuvvraaj may not be Subhash Ghai's best work yet, it is certainly one of the better melodramas that bollywood has churned out in recent times.

Two cheers for this one!

Many reasons to watch out for Yuvvraaj besides being yet another directorial venture of Subhash Ghai also known as the showman of Bollywood. The director not just reunites with his favorite star Anil Kapoor but also, for the very first time, has managed to rope in Salman Khan and his girl friend, the gorgeous Katrina Kaif for this musical. Combine that with the brilliance of A.R. Rehman music and we expect a winner, no less. The promos have received a mixed response; does Yuvvraaj have what it takes to make a good Subhash Ghai film?

Yuvvraaj is a musical story of a fragmented family of three brothers Deven YuvvRaaj (Salman Khan), Gyanesh (Anil Kapoor) and Danny (Zayed Khan) fighting and playing games with each other to inherit their father's wealth.

The story takes a curve when Anushka (Katrina Kaif) comes in to explain them the power of relationships over the power of money by using music to bind the love between them.

Let me break the suspense, Yuvvraaj is Subhash Ghai's best work this decade, but the director doesn't manage to hold your attention throughout the enterprise. The second half is comparatively much better than the first, which is very slow. The visuals of the film, the spontaneity of the characters, the good music, the impeccable chemistry between Salman and Anil and the romance between Salman and Katrina, are some of the things that work for Yuvvraaj. The negatives are the inconsistent and mediocre screenplay, Zayed Khan's poor performance and the pace. Also the core story may not be something that would appeal to the current generation. A movie like Yuvvraaj would have undoubtedly been a smash hit, if it had released in the 90s.

Extracting strong performances out of actors is something that Subhash Ghai is known for, Yuvvraaj is no different. Anil Kapoor manages to steal every scene and goes on to deliver his best performance in a long time. Anil should sweep the best actor in a supporting role category awards at the end of the year.

Salman Khan, in a mature role, does take you by surprise. Ditto for Katrina Kaif. Mostly seen in comical movies, she manages to bring spontaneity to her character. Nothing great, but she does well.

Zayed Khan continues to ham. Boman Irani is good. So is Mithun Chakraborty in his small role.

To sum up, the musical drama Yuvvraaj strikes the right cord in parts. A superb performance by Anil Kapoor and good performances from the rest of the cast holds the typical Subhash Ghai movie together.

Just heard Kaveri of HT fame review of Yuvraaj.
She just gave the movie " * ". Yes only one star.
That was surprising but she said the movie can be watched if you are big fan of Katrina and want to see how beautiful she is. Nothing else. No acting but just looking pretty.
She also said that the Stunning music of AR REHMAN was brutalized by the director.
Now I am thinking that it is not going to do great....
