Washington, November 4: : Heidi Klum, who dressed up as Hindu goddess Kali, who symbolises death and destruction, for her Halloween bash, has left the Hindu community in America fuming. The German supermodel dressed up as Kaali for the Halloween party at her place on Oct 31, and was even awarded for the best costume of the night. And now upset Hindus have asked Klum to make a public apology for posing as a sacred figure. "Goddess Kali is highly revered in Hinduism and she is meant to be worshipped in temples and not to be used in clubs for publicity stunts or thrown around loosely for dramatic effects," Contactmusic quoted Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed as saying.
He added: "Hindus welcome Hollywood and other entertainment industries to immerse themselves in Hinduism, but they should take it seriously and respectfully, and not just use the religion for decoration or to advance their selfish agenda. "Casual flirting sometimes results in pillaging serious spiritual doctrines and revered symbols and hurting the devotees." Other than Zed, various Hindu leaders, including Jawahar L. Khurana of the Hindu Alliance of India, and Bhavna Shinde of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, have condemned Klum for posing as Goddess Kali.

They went to the extent of calling Klum's act as "denigrating". Goddess Kali, who personifies Sakti or divine energy, is widely worshipped in Hinduism. She is considered the goddess of time and change. Some Bengali poets described her as supreme deity.

Generally, I'm opposed to people asking for an apology because they felt offended a la Jodha-Akbar but considering this atrocity, I feel it's justified to ask Heidi to apologize. Even though I'm not a devout or fanatic Hindu, what Heidi did was a tad more than a little offensive. While it is nice that she's attempting to learn about the culture, it is in bad taste to impersonate one of the religious deities, not just of the Hindu culture but of any culture.

actually even i noticed that hollywood and american tv industry always make fun of hinduism and their gods
For example, The simpsons..that show has made Lord Ganesh , a laughing matter
i was just watching one of the episode of "friends" y'day, in there, Ross had lord Ganesh statue on his table..and then he starts making out with his girl friend,,in all that, they end up kicking the statue and breaking it! Totally disrespectful

I'm partial on the Simpsons thing you referred to. They try to make fun of everything, every religion, culture and tradition equally from what I've observed; in fact, a lot of their jokes are centered around poking fun at Jesus or anti-Christian. The majority of the writers are atheists and it is apparent in the show. While I can see how what you are saying might be offensive, it could also be an allusion to the fact that most youngsters in today's generation don't really follow religion or satire on the ostensible conservative nature of Hindus. I'm also inclined to argue that as Simpsons is a cartoon show, it isn't meant to be serious but rather a tongue-in-cheek commentary that is obviously meant to be taken with a grain of salt.
All the same, I would agree that the general portrayal of the Hindu culture in the industry isn't positive.

Ma Kali "get up"? On Halloween? That makes Heidi not only hideously insenstive , unclutured , uncivilized and uncouth but also a total social and cultural illiterate. She is lucky that the Hindu Community or even any other religious community didn't hang her upside down for that . No matter how many names or faces you have for God ....God is the same for all children. So, if it is Lord Christ or Ma Kali , her disgusting act is a humiliation of God. Offering an apology isn't enough.... this brainless fashion cover should be put to rigorous communtity service too!
