Definitely Nihira. I am surprised that Hemchandra is
not more classically trained. He keeps claiming that his voiced his trained
in Carnatic music, but i rarely hear that in his singing.
I think that Nihira and Hema seem to have the best base. But I know that
Debo, Ujjaini, Twinkle and Himani are def. classically trained. Not sure
about Vineet.
Of our lost contestants I mention Sharib, Swananda, Sanchali, Abhijeet,
Keka, Raktima (thougn I don't like her voice), Himabindu and Niladri. I
feel like I am missing some contestants so please someone fill it in.
The fact that we have lost so many fine classical singers and have ended
up with Rajeev as a finalist - I think that really speaks to the deterioration
of music in India.
Also I think that it is fine to say that South Indians are generally more
classically based singers. It is true. It is part of their culture. Same for
Maharastrians and Bengalis. I don't think that it regionalism, Punjabis
and Gujratis are often excellent dancers. That does not means that there
are not many very good North Indian singers and I say this as a North
Indian. If anything, I expect more from Hema.
Thanks so much for opening this topic.
