Widows in Bengal and Punjab in old days

Finally I caught up with the Budhiya /Bua parts.
Its strange to find that widows in Punjab were treated the same way as widows in Bengal 50-60 years ago.
Their heads were shaved off so they wont look attractive. The Buddhi's hair is also probably chopped off so she keeps it hidden under her pallu.
The widows could not eat anything after dusk and were only given one full meal per day.
The meal consisted of plain fare like rice and vegetables, absolutely no meat, fish or poultry was allowed. Not even onions, garlic or masoor dal as they are supposed to make the body hot and widows shd always keep cool so they dont think abt sex.
Of course MEN....when their wives died, widowers could marry as many times as they wanted! 😡
Widows wore white all their life, and no jewelry. They didnt attend weddings or happy occasions. Their shadow was supposed to be manhoos, so they were barred from such celebrations.
They had to stay in a sparse, spartan room and sleep on the floor.
So whatever they are showing in Maayka is authentic. BUT widows were treated that way half a century ago. Now the scene has changed especially in cities.
But such customs still remain in many villages and backward societies which are steeped in old traditions and sexist attitudes.😡
This Bua was probably a child widow, she doesnt have any kids as her husband died before she could have any. Thats why the Khuranas are pitying her as she has nowhere else to go.
The buddi is horribly frustrated as she had a terribly unhappy life.
Such women always target other women in similarly unfortunate circumstances.
They take out all their rage and frustrations on other helpless women.
She hates and resents Soni becuz at least Soni has her husband's child growing inside and shes young and pretty and might remarry some day.
The Buddhi never had such chances in her lifetime. That is why shes determined to keep Soni unhappy, suffering and hoping she would lose her child.
She cant bear to see another woman's happiness, especially if that woman is a widow like herself.
Such malicious, twisted, unhappy people DO exist in this world.
And the attitude that a widowed woman is helpless and at the mercy of such harassment from Bua and her lecherous devar......that kind of thinking may be archaic and outdated but it still exists in the minds of many Indians.
Sorry to say but thats the truth.
Did anyone see the movie "Water" by Deepa Mehta? Its a horrifying account of such widows living in Benaras ashram.

I belong to punjab but I never heard of any custom about shaving widows head. In punjab widows do wear light color clothes and wear no jewelery., but time has changed a lot.
Ya i have heard and seen in movie that in Bengal widows have to shave their head.

Yes, shes really horrible and the actress is doing a good job of being hateful! 😡😆
Shes an old Bollywood actress whom Ive seen in movies before.
Yes, widows were blamed for the death of their husbands but widowers arent blamed for their wife's death. Sexist Society, Misogynist attitudes! 😡
I hope Soni doesnt lose her baby and Jeet throws the Budhiya out of the house or marries Soni somehow!

Yes, times have changed!
But many widows in Bengal still wear white saris, eat vegetarian food and keep Upvaas (fasts) on certain days. Ive seen my grandmas do that.
But of course they dont shave their heads anymore.....that was 70 yrs ago, when women had no rights, they got married at 13-14, stayed at home, cooked and had babies.

This is not true, women in Punjab were never treaed this bad. I do agree that women wear light clothes but the custom to shave thier head its is not true. it would have happened in Bengal's but not in our Punjab. it is just a show you cant relate to that, In the show it is happening to Soni but it does not mean that it would have happened to women in Punjab. I am not tyring prove that Punjab is the best but thats reality.Cheers

Maybe in ancient days it has happened. Now the world has changed. Also it is so pathetic that one old woman has so much power over ruling another family. It is true that you should respect and listen to your elders but provided it is acceptable. Now all doctors and medical institutes around the world harping about giving healthy, nourishing food and keeping regular diet for a pregnant mother is vital so that a healthy baby can be natured it is so sickening to see an educated family like Kurans has forgotten all about this and abiding by an old vicious woman's sayings. And Soni's so spineless and scared all the time and it is a disgrace for a woman to not have any self confidence to stand and fight for her rights. It is not Sonis fault Veer died and her in-laws very well know about it. This story and Saath Phere is also portraying child abuse at random. In this they are trying to abuse an unborn child. I hope they will stop this and focus on a more realistic theme as it is sickening to watch a woman being treated like a slave in this time and age. Does any one enjoy watching movies of this nature which has no end to harassments being dished out at women day in day out? I hope not.
