Deepika, Mallya attend India Day parade in NY

New York, Aug 18: Bollywood beauty Deepika Padukone lead the India Day parade as grand Marshal held in New York as part of the Independence Day celebration here.

Over 50,000 people, mostly Indian-Americans, cheered the over two dozen floats, richly decorated with patriotic themes.

The parade showcasing Indian cultural heritage and fast expanding economy also fascinated dozens of tourists from several nations visiting the United States.

Deepika Padukone was the grand Marshal of the parade, while industrialist Vijay Mallya was the chief guest.

The Federation of Indian Associations, an umbrella organisation of several cultural and community bodies which organises the parade, said it had invited Mallya as a symbol of the fast growing economic power of India.

The procession culminated in a cultural show where 89-year old Manna Dey, a popular Indian playback singer of yesteryears, recited some of his renderings.

Why are people allowed to crowd in front of a procession?I doubt if anyone on the sidelines got a glimpse of Deepika..

Some good pictures are posted on Rediff!I think our NRIs celebrate their patriotism with more enthusiasm than we do here.The floats were lovely!

Bollywood sensation Deepika Padukone led the India Day parade as grand marshal, as over 50,000 people, mostly Indian-Americans, cheered the over two dozen floats, richly decorated with patriotic themes as part of the independence day celebration in New York.

Designs for the day
Talking about it, Deepika says, "It feels great to be invited as Grand Marshall in New York as part of the Independence Parade and represent the country and the film industry. Especially since I am just a film old. I have always loved AR Rehman's version of Vande Mataram. Manish Malhotra, Tarun Tahiliani and Shantanu-Nikhil will be designing my outfits. I have not yet decided if I will wear a saree or western wear but I will wear a bright color as it's daytime. I might wear the more formal saree for dinner."

I think that this particular red dress is designedby Tarun Tahiliani...definitely not Manish anyway not his style!
