Abhijeet will not fight anymore
Abhijeet Bhattacharya
He is known for his firebrand image. Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya is also known for the strong emotional bond that he forms with the contestants he judges on talent hunt shows.

But, it was this emotional streak that landed him in a controversy, when recently, he objected to bringing back a non-Indian contestant Musarrat through a wild card entry instead of an Indian. And predictably so, he paid a heavy price for calling a spade a spade. But not anymore, he says in a no-holds-barred tte--tte...

Have you sorted out the differences over Pakistani singer Musarrat?

Let me put it this way, why should I become a reformer when no one minds being short changed by what is happening in the industry today. I am not the kind of judge who'd accept Rs 10,000-Rs 20,000 and sit on talent hunt shows that're being dictated by shoddy scripts written to push up the TRPs. I gave up Rs 70 lakhs to fight for our Indian contestants who are far more talented than the whole world put together. But I will not fight anymore. If contestants' parents are not bothered about their children's future, which is being robbed by non-Indians, who am I to stop them?

You really feel our kids' future is being robbed by participants from abroad?

Hundred per cent. Just watch when the auditions happen, where kids stand in long lines for days hoping to get selected. But participants from Pakistan are put on a flight and given direct entry into these shows, why? Kya khasiyat hai inme? Hindustan ke galli-galli mein Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan mil jayega, but unki koi kadar nahin. Par ek Pakistan se aa gaya toh humne usse sar pe utha liya.

You don't think there is any talent in Pakistan?

Aatif Aslam, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and hundred others are nothing compared to our singers like Javed Ali, Soham, Bulli, Raja Hassan, but no one wants to give them a chance. They say I am biased if I reprimand Musarrat – because he's a Pakistani, but they don't mind if I shout at Raja Hassan because he is an Indian. What sort of hypocrisy is this?

You have been very vocal over the choice of Musarrat?

I have always said that our children should be given first preference. But desh ki maryada ko dao pe lagana aaj kal fashion ho gaya hai. I don't know why do we have such a complex when it comes to shoving Pakistan back to where it belongs – the other side of the border?

But not everyone agrees with your stand?

Yes, I have been fighting alone for seven-eight years in this industry. But it's a shame that as Indians we have such a low regard for our nationality when it comes to protecting our kids' welfare. So now, I too have decided not to make a hue and cry about it.

What upsets you the most about the music industry today?

No other country will allow foreigners to work and earn so freely as we allow them here. They come here, earn crores, build assets, but does our government bother to check if they pay tax? Why are the Advanis, Karats, Mulayams and Kalams, all quiet over this? If I want to make a living in the US or the UK I need a working permit, while in Pakistan we are not even allowed to enter the country. Then why are we so large-hearted in the glamour and entertainment industry?
cheers

He makes a couple of valid points.
1) There's a good supply of talent to be found within India.
2) Pakistan is not as open as India in terms of accepting foreigners or people of Indian origin.
That said,
1. Entertainment industry is not the platform to raise political issues. People all over the world have the right to entertain others as well as to be entertained. In a way, he answered his own question. if nobody else is bothered then why should he bother?
2. India is a democracy. Pakistan is not. Does Abhijeet want to get away from a democratic country and go to some other country which is under, say, a dictatorship/taliban/communistic rulers? If not, he should enjoy what a democracy gives him as well as let others enjoy what democracy gives them. He has a right to object. But then, he shouldn't expect that his word should be the final. In a democracy , people can differ. That's the beauty of it. But then, people cannot start presuming that the government act immediately just because a couple of people have radical ideas. It doesn't work that way.
3. If Abhijeet wants to see how tolerant people could be, with respect to people from other countries and other religions, he should pay a visit to US or UK. He will learn a thing or two regarding tolerance.
4. I have seen an episode of SRGMP 2008 where some of the contestants from Pakistan said that they visited a local police station for work permit related issues. It's the rule and they are abiding by it. Every country has it's own rules and India too functions in it's own way. They are not going to make new rules or break existing rules just because Abhijeet has some concerns .
5. If Abhijeet cares so much for other talented singers from India, he should promote them instead of promoting himself all the time.
6. Abhijeet is getting paid to judge. A duty in which he has miserably failed because of his blind love for Sanchita and his hatred for singers from across the border.

Each person is entitled to his or her views. Sometimes certain things are grey and neither black nor white. But in this instance Zee should decide what they want because it is Zee that is footing the bills. Zee admits singers from other countries because they have viewership from other countries too and they want the interes to grow. It is all Dollars and Sense. Zee I presume is privately owned and not by the Govt. Muss is a great talent from Pakistan and it is a privelege to have him on the show. Anyway winner for the singing contest is decided by Abhijeet himself and Sanchita has been chosen in advance !😆

Abhijeet's words make sense ....although I have mixed feelings of what he said ....I support the idea of exposing talented singers from Pakistan or other places in India ..I am glad that we got to know maestros like rahat ali saab .... Gulam Ali and mehdi hassan from the past ....for music lovers that's a treat ....Moreover these r established singers ....
But I do understand what he meant by bringing these raw talents from other countires when lakhs of such talents r waiting in India ...join the lines for auditions under scorching heat ....some of them come from such a poor family that village people collect money to send them to Mumbai!!!!!!!....Musarrat is a sweetheart ...but we r not talking about good nature or "who has the best heart" contest here .....
In order to give chance to Mussarats in this world so many Rajas, Toshis, Aneeks in India will go unnoticed ..and that's not fair...I think when people understand that they will stop name calling Abhijeet da ....His drawback is his"in ur face attitude" ...but now he said he is not going to raise that issue anymore so I think Abhijeet's detractors should rest in peace !!!..
I am not very fond of him as a judge but I admire his talent as a singer and his passion for calling a spade a spade no matter how much flak he takes for that....
just my 2 cents😛

First of all you should have not called anyone from other countries besides India, if u did than have the decency to treat them properly after all they are your guests.
