Love Story 2050

04 Jul, 2008 08:00 am ISTlGaurav Malani/INDIATIMES MOVIES

Director: Harry Baweja
Cast: Harman Baweja, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani
Rating: * 1/2

Picture this. It's 2050. The world's transformed into a screensaver. There are airborne automobiles all over but filmmakers continue to build castles (read movies) in air. Robots have substituted companionship and are not just implanted with artificial intelligence but also embedded with fake feelings. Humankind emerge from holograms as customer care executives and you literally feel like calling for help. The heroine is red-headed but the director wins an empty-headed tag for serving us with a no-brainer. Product brands of today manage to survive four decades down the line and perhaps so will the standard of scripts that refuse to show any signs of upgrading.

Picture this. It's 2006. Filmmaker Harry Baweja considers making a science fiction but assumes that the audience is too inexperienced to accept the genre unconditionally. So he manipulates an obsolete love story believing that the viewer would now digest the assorted subject more willingly. And in his flawed hypothesis he ends up with a muddled mess which is something between a lackluster love story and a semi-science-fiction. Add to it, neither appeals!

Picture this. It's 2008. Harman Baweja attempts to make a dashing debut (literally) as he bangs his father's swanky car. Daddy dear is a business tycoon who has no time for his motherless son Karan (Harman). Now how many times have we seen such banal bonding before? Nevertheless, real-life father Harry Baweja has all the time to launch his son (again literally, through flying cars) in a futuristic film which unfortunately isn't ahead of its time.

Karan meets Sana (Priyanka Chopra), chases, dates and sings with her, gets separated and reunites and attempts every possible act to stretch the screenplay till the interval. The director has dedicatedly devoted the first half merely for the love story. 2050 appears only in the second half where the techno-savvy world comprises of touch-screen gadgets and perhaps India is again ruled by foreigners as most inhabitants of Mumbai resemble firangs .

Sana dies in the first half and our hero is pretty sure that she will be reborn in 2050. His scientist uncle (Boman Irani) who is a confused combination of an astrologer-cum-astronomer reaffirms his faith. Uncle Frankenstein has designed a time machine which transports them into future. Sana is Zeisha now and suddenly the modern day sci-fi takes an ancient Bollywood turn with the reincarnation theme. This Karan has no Arjun but with just one song he rekindles memories of past life in his lifeless romance with Sana.

Meanwhile the director also inserts an archetypal villain though he chooses to keep his face covered for reasons unknown. This faceless bad man looks like the first cousin of Mogambo and suspiciously sounds like Gulshan Grover. Is Grover resorting to barely dubbing for films or did the director midways mistake his film to be an animation attempt? Expectedly, the villain is in search of the time machine which assures a climax combat with the hero.

The screenplay grilled by multiple writers is a clear case of too many cooks spoil the broth. The first half is long-drawn-out with a lousy love story while scenes are specially written in the second half only to accommodate brand endorsements. The special effects aren't shoddy but not of the exceptional variety either. However that doesn't affect much as the effects are almost relegated to the background while the romance takes preventable prominence. Moreover the visual graphics remind of several Hollywood films like The Fifth Element, Total Recall and The Star Wars series. Also the villain's vicious intentions are clearly derived from Krrish .

Of the performances, Boman Irani hams hysterically. Priyanka Chopra overdoes the Pooh image to irksome effect. Archana Puran Singh repeats her Punjabi act for the zillionth time. Harman Baweja, intentionally or unintentionally, has a strong Hrithik Roshan hangover in his looks, performance, body-language, mannerisms, action, dancing and dialogue delivery but surprisingly it works to his advantage. In the pre-climax party scene he also derives a lot in his act from Shah Rukh Khan. But a confident charm works to his merit.

Through the film, Harman keeps repeating a line 'I don't need luck, I have love'. Perhaps an overdose of love will surely make him seek some luck, now.

What a waste of a Rs500 million budget!

by Sheeba Hasan

Wish Harry Baweja had kept it simple. By the look of the film's first half, it seems a love story set in 2008 would have worked better as son Harman's debut film instead of Love Story 2050, which really is neither here nor there.

Yes, the movie moves across places and time, but unfortunately, it belongs nowhere, and goes nowhere. In fact, it just loses its way in a maze created by a bad script and even worse story-telling.

As a genre, it's neither a full blown romantic film nor a science fiction. Kindly put, it's a misdirected attempt, albeit an ambitious one, to launch Harman Baweja in a film that set out to stand apart from the rest. It does stand apart, but not for its brilliance but the immense disappointment that it leaves you with. What a waste of a Rs500 million budget!

No, the hype does not kill it. In fact, one stepped into the first day's first show with no expectations, instead probably with a little sympathy for the film and its debutant hero as the giant Aamir Khan and his cutthroat marketing of "Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Na" was threatening to squash Harman's dream, even before he could prove himself.

A handful of people in the cinema were the first ominous sign of things to come. As Karan (Harman) made a stylised entry on the big screen, we waited for the next big things to happen. But what did, was pretty regular stuff... Love at first sight, Karan subsequently wooing Sana (Priyanka Chopra), the couple singing some melodious songs, while the eye-pleasing scenery of South Australia rolled in the background.

But just when we think the lonely Karan is alone no more, it's time to go into the future. The Shanghai-lookalike Mumbai of 2050 is where he lands along with scientist Uncle Ya (Boman Irani) and Sana's siblings. Our happy hero of the first half is now on a mission, which progresses in a painfully confused manner. Here we just have a haphazard bunch of sequences that don't connect cohesively and challenge logic every step of the way.

By now you genuinely feel sorry for Harman and even have no patience or appreciation for the special effects that inconsistently appear on screen. Some are amateurish, some competent, but by now you simply don't care.

At almost 3 hours, this love story makes you weep for a happy ending, or just any ending.

Amidst all that's mediocre and bad, Harman makes his presence felt. For most of film he is at ease and dances like a dream, and except for a few scenes that required complex emoting, his acting passes muster. And yes, not just the face, even his voice and on screen mannerisms are also quite like Hrithik Roshan's. So whether he likes it or not, comparisons will remain and it will take a lot of effort from him to come into his own.

Priyanka's performance fluctuates between likable and contrived, and despite the long length of the role, she doesn't really make a mark. The remaining cast has bit roles, and even the immensely talented Boman Irani fails to win you over.

The fault lies mainly with the script, screenplay and direction. Together, the three make you so weary that while you do notice that the music is pleasing and the sets beautifully crafted, you can't be bothered with applauding.

'I don't need luck because I have love', is Karan's favourite line in the film. Well, Harman may have love, but for Love Story 2050 to work, he'll only need luck. And lots of it.

Movie Reviews

By Taran Adarsh, July 4, 2008 - 11:16 IST

LOVE STORY 2050 has elicited tremendous response for varied reasons…
* One, its one-of-its-kind sci-fi fare, with a big chunk of footage devoted to VFX.
* Two, the pre-release hype, the frenzy in the media, the various tie-ups/endorsements has kept LOVE STORY 2050 constantly in news.
* Three, LOVE STORY 2050 marks the debut of Harman Baweja, one actor who has been lapped up by industry bigwigs even before his debut vehicle has hit the screens. It's a hi-profile launch.

From the looks of it, LOVE STORY 2050 demands a dekho, but there's a hitch…

Special effects -- for that matter the trappings used to embellish a movie -- work only if a movie has a rock-solid base: Content. Unfortunately, LOVE STORY 2050 gives more preference to special effects, while the writing takes a complete backseat.

Write your own movie review of Love Story 2050
There's no denying that Harry Baweja's intentions are genuine and noble, but, seriously, did the veteran get carried away by special effects? No doubt, the basic idea sounds interesting and the viewer would love to be a participant in this time-travel film, but what comes across is amateurish.

Given a title like LOVE STORY 2050, the film ought to evoke strong emotions, mainly towards the second hour, when the lead man has a tough time convincing his lady-love. But technical wizardry and VFX dominate this hour, while the emotional moments fail to evoke any reactions. Actually, your heart does not pine for the lovers and that's why this love story hardly creates any impact.

The silver lining is -- you've guessed it -- Harman Baweja. You may compare him with Hrithik Roshan [in terms of looks]. You may find his dialogue delivery similar to that of SRK. But the guy is a lambe race ka ghoda. Ranbir Kapoor now has tough competition. It's Harman Baweja, the new flavor of the season!

Karan [Harman Baweja], a young, spirited, sporty boy lives life off the rules, while Sana [Priyanka Chopra], a petite, shy girl lives life by the rules. Opposites attract… and love blossoms. Karan's uncle, Dr. Yatinder Khanna's [Boman Irani] much developed time machine finally works. Sana expresses her wish to travel ahead in time to Mumbai. But there's an accident…

Mumbai 2050. Flying cars, 200 storey buildings, robots and sky rails have changed the face of Mumbai. Through a series of twists and turns, Karan finds himself separating from his love. Meanwhile, Dr. Yatinder and Karan are under threat from Dr. Hoshi.

You are mesmerized by the initial scenes in LOVE STORY 2050. And it's not the script that hooks and magnetizes you. Harman's skills as an actor and also a gymnast [watch him give the firangs a chase] makes you speechless. Note the cycle chase [wow!] or Harman wooing Priyanka on a roller coaster [superb… you sure have guts, Harman]. The film works in this hour because the chemistry between the lead actors is also piping hot.

But things go downhill in the post-interval portions. What takes precedence are special effects, robots, gizmos, the masked villain… In this melee, the writing is put on the backburner.

Director Harry Baweja is letdown by the script. The idea is exciting, but what comes across is off-putting. Anu Malik's music is tuneful. 'Sach Kehna' and 'Milo Na Milo' stand out, also because Harman's dance movements are exceptional [kudos to the choreographer]. Cinematography [Vijay Arora] is first-rate. Sound quality [Dwarak Warrier] is top class. Dialogues [Mayur Puri] suit the mood of the film. Sets [Omung Kumar] deserve special mention. They're truly imaginative! Special effects are topnotch, matching international standards. Costumes and styling are avant garde.

Harman Baweja has the potential to be a major star, a front-runner. No two opinions on that! He's an exceptional dancer and looks handsome as well. But most importantly, he knows the grammar of acting well. Watch out for this kid! Priyanka Chopra is immensely likable. She suits her part to the T. Boman Irani is efficient. Archana Puransingh is lovable. The kids don't contribute at all.

On the whole, LOVE STORY 2050 rests on a thin plot and that would curtail its reach to a major extent. Disappointing!

2/5

Love Story 2050 Disappoints

Friday 4th July 2008 20.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Love Story 2050 has opened to a poor 40% response. The film has been released on 725 cinemas including 350 digital cinemas so if the weekend has the usual pick up then the grosses at the end of the week could be okay but not in proportion to the costs and release of the film.

Its going to take a huge task for the film to cover the costs of its distributors. The silver lining is that despite the film not being upto the mark Harman Baweja like Ranbir Kapoor before him has been accepted by the industry and public and has many big films under his belt already.

I just wished critics has watched harman as a debut just as they did with other debut. I haven't watched the movie yet, but i can say harman couldn't be bad as critics are bashing him. they are bashing just they see hrithik in him.
