...and the songs that made them extra special in the rains

1 of 11

Rains can be naughty. Rains can definitely be romantic. And rains we know is fun. But for Bollywood, rains are much, much more. For our glitzy tinsel townies, rains are an excuse to pull the crowds to the theatre. It's another reason to pen some sultry or romantic numbers. And it's definitely a good way to make more money.

We love rains. And the many songs that go along with it. The wet Aamirs and Akshays are any day yummier than the dry ones for one. Let's take a look at our pick of ten best watery numbers that make our knees turn liquid...

Tip tip barsa paani from Mohra

Rains: A time to get close...

The hunky Akshay Kumar in a wet white shirt and the sultry Raveena wrapped in yellow chiffon - what more can you ask for? The song from Mohra was an instant hit for it's sheer sensuality. Even the big grandpa umbrella that Kumar carried did not make the guy look any less sexy than he did. Definitely one of the sultriest rain numbers of all times. Chances are that when asked, 8 out of ten people in a group will sing this song first when asked for a rain song!

Jo haal dil ka from Sarfarosh

Rains: Bring on a dash of colour!

The very serious Aamir Khan film however interesting and gripping was very grey...if not for this very colourful number in the rain. The audience just could not get enough of the sexy Sonali in a wet...saree...ghagra....whatever thing! And with Aamir colour coordinating his shirts with Bendre's blues and yellows and reds, the song was definitely a treat for the eyes. Well it did take care of many of the other senses too...

Dekho na from Fanaa

Rains: A time to love

If something was nice in this film, it was the music and the Aamir-Kajol chemistry. And the song satisfied us both visually as well as aurally. One of the most romantic rain songs, it makes us wish we had somebody to share the song with

Pyaar hua ikraar hua hai from Shree 420

Rains: Time to take a long walk...

One of the most romantic songs ever made in B'wood history - with or without rains! This song till date pulls at our heartstrings. Raj Kapoor and Nargis were the epitome of romance for ages to come and have inspired many a ad campaign (a certain not so well made condom ad comes in our mind) in the not-so-recent past.

Aaj rapat jaaye from Namak Halaal

Rains: A time to get naughty

A drenched Amitabh Bachchan and the dusky beauty Smita Patil on top of a vegetable cart in the rain...who knew they can create sparks with that? And god what sparks! Even the heavy downpour did not do anything to douse them. One of the best and naughtiest rain songs ever. This is certainly one of our favourites.

Dekho zara dekho barkha ki jhari from Yeh Dillagi

Rains: A time to start some sizzle

Akshay Kumar and Kajol we thought were having pure and unadulterated fun in this song until they shared a rather flaming kiss in the end. In the movie, this was the beginning of their love story. It was the heavy downpour that added a spark to their relationship. Well, who knew that water could also start fire! Only in Bollywood we say...only in Bollywood!

Dilbara from Dhoom

Rains: A time to dance

Esha Deol was cute not hot. But after this song...we thought otherwise. Dancing in the rain with Uday Chopra on a cute number, this is a song on our list of memorable rain songs. If not otherwise, this song will definitely remember Esha as a hot little thing!

Ek ladki bheegi bhaagi si from Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi

Rains: A time to tease

A drenched Madhubala and a naughty Kishore Kumar makes this cute rain song memorable. An inconvenience caused by a sudden downpour makes for a wonderfully cute

Bhaage re mann from Chameli

Rains: A time to let go

Rain sure brings out the best love songs ever. But this one is different. It's not romantic love, the song celebrates but love in general. It celebrates the heart and the freedom it experiences while it rains. It is the song where the protagonist Chameli played by Kareena Kapoor lets go of her worries, her thoughts, her inhibitions to celebrate. To celebrate the magical journey of life! And trust the Bollywood rains to bring about such a realisation!

Saawan mein lag gayi aag from Woodstock Villa

Rains: A time to have fun

Well, we do like the original Mika song that happened years back better than the remixed version in the film. But this song is surely on our list. Mainly because it shows us how rains can be fun. It can be sexy, sultry, romantic and many things. And all this makes the rains a time to have fun - pure fun or NIRMAL ANAND! as our tinsel townies would love to call it.

My fave is the one with Akshaye Khanna and Sonali Bendere called Sawaan Barse Tarse Dil. It's cute, not like the typical rain songs.
