Star One was the first to introduce the concept of a marathon run for a serial. Weekly comedies like
Saarabhai Vs Saarabhai and Instant Khichdi were aired throughout the day, every Sunday drawing viewers in considerable numbers. Pitched at the upmarket, urban and young audience aged between 15-34, Star One didn't take long to connect with its target audience.
Remix, a youth-oriented serial is a big hit amongst the youngsters.
According to the producer, Shristi Arya, "Kids have put up a site on the internet Remix gang which follows the happenings in Tia, Anvesha and Ranvir's lives." But it was with
The Great Indian Laughter Challenge (TGLC) which cut across age groups and class that the channel created deep pockets. The laugh-riot grabbed eye-balls luring audiences away from Sony and Zee. According to a channel official, Sony was strong on Fridays but
TGLC has decimitated its competitiors. The laughter show opened with a 2.7 TVR and went on to garner a high of 13.5. Their latest talent-hunt
Nach Baliye, the celebrity dance competition, is giving the other channels a run for the TRPs. The show opened with a bang, garnering 4.8 TVR "the highest ever for a non-Star Plus show" and is expected to soar. With the success of
TGLC and
Nach Baliye, the channel is also changing its profile. No longer will it be restricted to the ABC class in the 15-34 age group. "We want to broad base the channel and make it an alternative to Star Plus," says Sameer Nair, COO, Star India. So, you have a mix of Jassi and Kareena in their new show
India Calling and a spine-chiller in
Darna Mana Hai premiering on Novembver 14. The spooky promos promise to keep you on-the-edge-of-seat.
India Calling traces the life of a young attractive girl Chandni who comes from Jalandhar to Mumbai in search of her sister and lands up working in a call centre. Says Shristi Arya, producer, "Despite what people think, the serial has no similarity whatsoever with either
Jassi ... or
Kareena .... All the same, I feel flattered because
Jassi... will go down in the history of Indian television as a show that introduced a new genre.
India Calling is set in a urban centre and revolves around a Punjabi girl simply because that is the ethos and culture I understand very well."
India Calling has Manasi Parekh, Jo of
Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi and Cookie of
Kasauti Zindagi Ki, playing the protagonist. Vipul Gupta, a popular model, makes his debut as Aditya.

The other show
Darna Mana Hai according to Kacon Sethi, producer, is a fast-forward of the movie by the same name. "Though we haven't taken any stories from the film, the philosophy is the same. It is about creating fear and fearful situations without blood and gore." The show, according to her, will redefine horror on Indian television. To be directed by the likes of Saurabh Shukla, Vivek Agnihotri and Pawan Kaul, each story will be stretched over four episodes. The first story has Rajeshwari Sachdev and Rajesh Tandon in the lead. The other episodes will star Vijay Raaz, Aamir Bashir and Jugal Hansraj. "The casting is unusual. As in the series, expect the unexpected," says Sethi. With the launch of new shows, the channel which completes one year is rescheduling its programming line-up.
Super Sale will be aired at 8.30 pm while
Siddhant and
Special Squad go off the air to make way for
India Calling - Monday-Wednesday at 9.30 pm followed by
Darna Mana Hai at 10 pm Monday to Thursday. The new arrivals will also lead to heavy cross-promotion of shows aired on Star Plus and Star One which the channel had avoided so far. January will see the second season of
The Great Indian Laughter Challenge with the winners of the first one becoming the jury. The channel has also bought the rights for
Desperate Housewives, the
desi version of which will be made by Ekta Kapoor. Incidentally, she is already making a soap for Star One. With shows no longer targetted at a specific audience and new genres being introduced, one wonders whether there will be any difference at all, between Star Plus and Star One. Says Nair, "In theory, the shows on Star One will not be similar to Star Plus. The Star One shows will take the drama out of the house." i think our forum is a lot more comprehensive...how do we make the producersn director take note of it?all suggestions r welcome
