Hi friends,
How she does that is, with a single knock of her walking stick on the floor. She uses her magical power to help Colin Firth, a widower to discipline his children and eventually find true love in another woman worthy of playing mother to his children. Naturally in the scheme of things, Nanny Mcphee, despite her unpleasant appearance and ways was a God sent. Power, be it magic or something else can either be used to do good or the exact opposite, destroy. Quite often but not, power corrupts the person who possesses it.
Somewhere in reality and not quite so, another Nanny McPhee was on her way to swinging her wand in gay abandon. Bollywood's finest actress, Rani Mukherjee was to play the desi counterpart of McPhee in the Hindi remake, 'Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic'. Kunal Kohli who had earlier directed Rani and Saif in 'Hum Tum' wanted to reignite the success by repeating this jodi.
Apparently the movie has Saif playing a business executive who is left with four kids, while Rani plays a fairy who assumes the role of a nanny to these kids. The no-show of 'Tara Rum Pum', Saif and Rani's last film together did not deter Yash Raj films from repeating them in another production. Saif and Rani with kids a la 'Tara Rum Pum' is a recipe for disaster, and yet here they are, repeating better-forgotten history.
It doesn't take a genius to figure out why they ditched their otherwise keen business sense. Rani is after all now the lady of the house since she's dating Yash Chopra's heir apparent, Adi Chopra. Rani whose career was otherwise dwindling found an anchor in Adi who's even gone ahead to divorce his wife to make way for his new queen. All this has perhaps given Rani ample scope to hold court and make every Yash Raj film that she's in, her playground.
Amisha Patel was clear in her head when she signed up as the second lead in 'Thoda Pyaar..' that she will be playing second fiddle to Rani in the plot. She was well aware of her portions in the film not to mention her screen time, which was precisely half of Rani's. Yet by pure virtue of it being a Yash Raj production, a feather in her cap and a definite push to her own down sliding career; in all good faith, Miss Patel dived right in.
Subsequently, the shooting commenced and Rani's act as the ringmaster started. At first there were no hiccups. But Rani's never been known to be the secure sorts. The presence of another heroine in the frame was bound to get to her at some point. Plus there's an over-riding underdog syndrome that Rani's faced in her career, until now. And in classic Rani style, Amisha was first befriended before being backstabbed. And the friendship happened by default.
On their schedule abroad, Saif had a visitor, his girlfriend, Kareena Kapoor. Now Rani and Kareena go way back. They were friends a long time ago. In fact back then, when they acted in Karan Johar's 'Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Ghum' and Yash Raj's 'Mujhse Dosti Karogi', Rani was gung ho about Bebo.
Right from baby sister to baby, Rani was all set to take the fledgling under her wings. But sooner rather than later, Bebo realized Rani was not what she seemed. After a few bitter experiences, their friendship eventually fizzled out. Rani was however in a tight spot when Kareena, after all these years came face to face at the shooting of 'Thoda Pyaar…'. The long awkward silences were getting annoying and the constant lovers' PDAs a splinter in her eyes.
Fortunately for Rani, Amisha was at arm's length. A new friend and Kareena's fastest foe at that. Everyone knows that Amisha and Kareena were arch rivals a long time ago, at a time when Dinosaurs still freely roamed the earth. And even if this was old hat, Bebo's not exactly someone who forgives and forgets easily. Amisha was, as Rani perceived, perfect salt-on-the-wounds material.
In a bid to make Bebo envious, Rani charmed Amisha with her clichd terms of endearment and praises that the poor Patel read as genuine. In the days to come, Rani would hang out with Amisha with Bebo as an on-looker. Although Bebo's purpose was to spend time with her beau, it helped Rani to believe that her growing friendship with Amisha might've upset her a teeny bit. This child's play continued for a bit until it was time for Bebo to leave.
Bebo's departure was a cue for Rani to come back to character. She distanced herself from Amisha gradually, who was left wondering what had construed to change temperatures from hot to cold. Rani's shift in attitude towards Amisha was something the unit noticed immediately. It was not in Amisha's nature to ask questions, so she continued to work with her lips sealed. And she probably realized that it's the bigger picture she needed to concentrate on, which at this point was the completion of the film.
And soon enough the film was a wrap. Nonetheless, this is the Hindi film industry and what you work on is not always what you see as the end product. A lot happens on the editing table. Ask the likes of Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan. This time, it was Rani who was Miss Edward scissorhands. When the first cut of the film arrived, Amisha was in for a rude shock.
Her scenes had been chopped reducing her screen time to half of what was promised and shot for. The technical staff were the first ones to notice the cuts and the news spread like wild fire. Needless to say, Amisha was thoroughly disappointed.
However if Amisha was under the impression that this was the peak of Rani's manipulation, she had another thing coming. When the promos of the film were launched, Amisha realized she was nowhere in them. It was as if she was never a part of the film. Rani had politely head butted Amisha out of all publicity for the film.
She was relegated to being nothing but a character artist; at least the treatment meted out to her told her where she was standing. There was no debating the fact that Rani had full control over the situation, this being home turf. Suddenly Amisha's excitement of being a part of the prestigious Yash Raj project died down. She thought it wise to wash her hands off the eventuality of her role.
Whatever will be, will be was her maxim. To her the only thing magical about the film was the way she disappeared from it. When the news of Rani's serious involvement with Adi Chopra first broke loose, everyone suspected her of misusing her power as the future Chopra bahu. It's not wise to mix business with pleasure was some cynics' remark. And one can already see the truth in that.
