Prologue

The Perfect Match

“Do you love her?”

The question was simple.

The silence that followed wasn’t.

Maan Singh Khurana looked away from the floor-to-ceiling windows of his study and towards his grandmother.

Savitri Devi Khurana sat opposite him, watching him with an expression he knew far too well.

“Dadima—”

“It’s a yes-or-no question, Maan.”

His jaw tightened.

“Since when did love become a prerequisite for marriage?”

Dadima’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Maan noticed.

He always noticed.

“Since marriage became about spending your entire life with another human being.”

“Sameera and I understand each other.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“We respect each other.”

“Maan.”

“Our families know each other. She’s educated, independent and understands the responsibilities that come with the Khurana family.”

Dadima sighed.

“You’ve given me her résumé.”

Maan frowned.

“I asked whether you love her.”

He turned towards the window again.

Outside, Khurana Mansion was glowing.

Workers were putting the finishing touches on the decorations. Flowers had arrived hours earlier. Security had doubled at the gates. Caterers were moving through the gardens.

Tomorrow evening, Delhi’s elite would gather beneath this roof.

And Maan Singh Khurana would become engaged to Sameera Malhotra.

Everything had been arranged.

Everything made sense.

So why was Dadima asking questions that didn’t?

“Love isn’t enough to sustain a marriage, Dadima.”

“No,” she agreed quietly.

Maan looked at her.

She smiled.

“But neither is a checklist.”

Sameera Malhotra was perfect.

There really wasn’t another word for her.

She knew exactly what to wear to a Khurana charity gala.

Exactly what to say to an international investor.

Exactly how much affection to display publicly without turning their relationship into gossip.

She never complained when Maan cancelled dinner because of work.

She never demanded explanations when he disappeared into meetings for twelve hours.

She understood his need for space.

And most importantly—

She never tried to change him.

They had been friends for years.

When their families suggested marriage, neither found a compelling reason to refuse.

Maan considered that maturity.

Dadima apparently considered it concerning.

“You like her,” Dadima said.

“Yes.”

“You trust her?”

“Yes.”

“You respect her?”

“Obviously.”

“Do you miss her?”

Maan’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“When you don’t see Sameera for three days, do you miss her?”

“What kind of question is that?”

Dadima smiled knowingly.

“An inconvenient one.”

Maan picked up the file on his desk.

“This conversation is over.”

“Of course.”

She stood.

At the door, she stopped.

“Maan?”

He didn’t look up.

“Hmm?”

“I hope someday you meet someone whose absence gives you the answer that her presence couldn’t.”

His hand stilled over the document.

But by the time he looked up, Dadima had already left.

The engagement happened exactly as planned.

No surprises.

No disasters.

No imperfections.

Sameera descended the staircase looking breathtaking.

Maan waited below.

She smiled when she reached him.

“Nervous?”

“No.”

“Of course not.” She laughed softly. “Maan Singh Khurana doesn’t get nervous.”

He almost smiled.

“And you?”

“Not particularly.”

That was Sameera.

Calm.

Composed.

Certain.

Exactly like him.

Perhaps that was why everyone believed they were perfect together.

The priest completed the small rituals requested by the elders.

Their families exchanged gifts.

Then the rings arrived.

Sameera extended her hand.

Maan slipped the diamond onto her finger.

Applause filled Khurana Mansion.

Sameera placed his ring on his finger.

Camera flashes exploded around them.

Dadima smiled.

Yet somewhere behind that smile lived the same question.

Do you love her?

Maan ignored it.

He looked at the woman standing beside him.

Beautiful.

Intelligent.

Compatible.

His future wife.

What else did a man need?

The celebrations continued late into the night.

By midnight, the last guests had departed.

By one, Sameera and her family had left.

By two, Khurana Mansion had finally become silent.

Maan entered his bedroom, loosened his tie and glanced at the ring on his finger.

Engaged.

He expected the word to feel different.

It didn’t.

His phone vibrated.

Sameera: Goodnight, fiancé. ❤️

Maan looked at the message.

A few seconds later, he typed:

Maan: Goodnight.

He placed the phone down.

Outside his room, Dadima happened to be passing.

She noticed the light beneath his door.

She stopped.

For one moment, she considered knocking.

Then didn’t.

“Babaji,” she murmured softly, “bas mere Maan ko khush rakhna.”

She walked away.

Neither grandmother nor grandson knew that somewhere beyond the gates of Khurana Mansion…

Babaji had apparently already begun working on it.

Prologue 2

The next morning

"STOP!"

A woman's scream echoed across the Khurana driveway.

The security guards froze.

A taxi driver slammed on the brakes.

A suitcase rolled dramatically across the driveway...

...straight into a black Mercedes.

THUD.

The mansion's head security officer closed his eyes.

This wasn't good.

"MY BAG!"

A girl came running through the gates.

Her dupatta was half falling from one shoulder, her phone was trapped between her ear and cheek, and another suitcase dragged behind her as she attempted to rescue the first one.

"Mumma, I'll call you back!"

She disconnected.

"Oh no, no, no..."

She crouched beside the Mercedes.

A faint scratch ran across the bumper.

Her eyes widened.

"Babaji."

She looked around.

"Whose car is this?"

Nobody answered.

That should have worried her.

It didn't.

"Hello?"

The guards exchanged terrified glances.

Geet frowned.

"Why is everyone looking like someone died?"

A deep voice came from behind her.

"Because someone is about to."

Geet froze.

Slowly...

very slowly...

she turned around.

Black trousers.

White shirt.

Rolled sleeves.

Broad shoulders.

Expression carved from stone.

And eyes currently fixed on the scratch across his car.

Geet looked at him.

Then at the Mercedes.

Then back at him.

"Oh."

Maan Singh Khurana stared at the stranger standing beside his damaged car.

"Who are you?"

Geet straightened.

"First tell me who you are."

Every security guard suddenly discovered something fascinating about the ground.

Maan's eyebrow lifted.

"You're standing inside my property."

Geet blinked.

Then looked at the enormous mansion behind him.

Back at him.

Then at the mansion again.

Her eyes widened.

"No."

Maan said nothing.

"You're..."

His expression remained cold.

Geet swallowed.

"Maan Singh Khurana?"

"Unfortunately for you."

Geet looked at the scratch.

Then at Maan.

Then whispered:

"Babaji... first day mein hi?"

Maan heard her.

"Excuse me?"

"Nothing!"

She immediately smiled.

It was perhaps the least convincing innocent smile Maan had ever seen.

"I'm Geet."

He waited.

"Geet Handa."

Something changed.

Not in Maan.

Behind him.

Dadima had just entered the foyer.

Her face instantly brightened.

"GEET!"

Maan turned.

Geet's nervous expression disappeared.

"Dadima!"

She ran straight past Maan.

Dadima opened her arms and embraced her.

Maan stared.

Dadima laughed.

"Finally! We've been waiting for you."

We?

Maan's eyes narrowed.

Dadima held Geet's face affectionately.

"You're even prettier than your photographs."

Geet grinned.

"And you're much younger than yours!"

Dadima laughed delightedly.

Maan's headache began.

Then Dadima said the sentence that made it considerably worse.

"Maan, this is the girl I told you about."

"You didn't tell me about any girl."

"I must have forgotten."

Maan knew perfectly well Savitri Devi Khurana forgot nothing.

Dadima continued cheerfully.

"Geet will be staying with us."

Silence.

Maan looked at Geet.

Geet looked at Maan.

Maan looked at his scratched Mercedes.

Geet followed his gaze.

She gave him another nervous smile.

"How long?"

Geet's smile vanished.

Dadima frowned.

"Maan!"

"What?"

"At least welcome her!"

Maan looked directly at Geet.

"Welcome to Khurana Mansion, Miss Handa."

Geet brightened.

Then he added-

"Stay away from my car."

Her mouth dropped open.

He walked away.

Geet stared after him.

"Dusht Danav!"

Maan stopped.

Dadima covered her mouth.

The guards stopped breathing.

Slowly, Maan turned his head.

"What did you say?"

Geet smiled sweetly.

"I said... beautiful mansion."

His eyes narrowed.

She widened hers innocently.

For several seconds they stared at each other.

Then Maan walked away.

Geet released the breath she'd been holding.

Dadima burst out laughing.

"What?" Geet asked.

Dadima looked towards the disappearing figure of her grandson.

Then at the girl standing beside her.

For reasons she couldn't explain, yesterday's question returned to her.

Do you love her?

Sameera Malhotra was everything the Khurana family could have chosen for Maan.

Perfect upbringing.

Perfect education.

Perfect manners.

Perfect match.

And Geet Handa?

She had been inside Khurana Mansion for less than five minutes.

She had damaged Maan's car.

Argued with him.

Called him Dusht Danav.

And disturbed the carefully controlled silence surrounding him without even trying.

Dadima smiled.

Perhaps perfection wasn't what Maan needed after all.

Perhaps life had something considerably more troublesome planned for her grandson.

Maan Singh Khurana was already engaged.

His wedding had already been discussed.

His future had already been decided.

Everything was exactly where it belonged.

And then...

Geet Handa entered Khurana Mansion.

Sometimes the person chosen to become your wife...

and the person destined to become your Jeevan Sangini...

are not the same person.

Prologue 1

Captivating prologue... superbly written

So Maan is getting engaged to Sameera

Well she ticks all the boxes

She is perfect for him and understand him

Dadima's question was reasonable

Of cos Maan does not love Sameera

Now Maan and Sameera are engaged

As expected she is compatible and suits him

Maan's thoughts were reasonable

Not surprised that dadima wants Maan's happiness

Glad that fate will intervene

Chaos in the form of Geet Handa has entered Maan's perfect life

They started on a bad note

Poor Geet realised too late

Thank God dadima arrived and saved Geet from Maan

Adore Geet and dadima's bond

Of cos dadima forgot to tell Maan about Geet

Great that Geet would stay with them

Ha brave Geet called Maan dusht danav

Dadima's thoughts were understandable

Loved that Geet is not afraid of Maan
