Chapter 7 - The Hidden Door

The night settled quietly over Khurana Mansion.

The reunion between Dadima and Geet had left an emotional silence in its wake. Even the servants spoke in hushed voices, as though afraid to disturb the fragile peace that had finally returned after five long years.

Geet stood alone on the balcony outside the living room.

The cool breeze carried the familiar fragrance of jasmine flowers blooming in the garden below.

Closing her eyes, she let the memories wash over her.

She remembered laughing with Pinky while decorating the mansion for festivals.

She remembered arguing with Adi over his terrible singing.

Most of all...

She remembered Maan.

The countless evenings they had spent on this very balcony without saying much. Sometimes silence had been enough. She would watch the sunset while he read project files. Every now and then, he would glance at her, making sure she had eaten, making sure she wasn't cold, making sure she was smiling.

Those little moments had slowly become love.

A tear escaped her eye.

"I never wanted to leave..."

she whispered.

A familiar voice answered from behind.

"Then why did you?"

She turned.

Maan stood at the balcony entrance.

His hands were folded across his chest.

His expression remained unreadable.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Finally, Geet looked away.

"I don't have an answer you'll accept."

"Try me."

She smiled sadly.

"If I tell you, you'll only hate me more."

"I've already spent five years hating you."

His voice was calm.

"It didn't help."

She looked at him, surprised by the honesty in his words.

He walked closer, stopping beside the balcony railing.

"The question isn't whether you left."

He looked toward the dark sky.

"It's why."

Geet's fingers tightened around the railing.

"I wish I could tell you."

"I know."

His answer caught her off guard.

"You do?"

"I saw your eyes today."

He finally looked at her.

"You aren't hiding the truth because you're guilty."

He paused.

"You're hiding it because you're afraid."

The words struck her like lightning.

She quickly looked away before he could see the tears gathering again.

"I'm tired."

she whispered.

"So am I."

For the first time...

Neither of them argued.

Inside the mansion...

Dadima watched them quietly through the living room window.

A gentle smile appeared on her face.

The butler approached.

"They're talking."

Dadima nodded.

"They're finally listening."

"I've prayed for this day for five years."

She looked toward the small temple in the corner.

"But I know this storm isn't over yet."

The next morning...

Maan arrived at the office carrying the mysterious photograph he had received the previous evening.

He placed it on the conference table.

Adi, Geet, the security chief, and the chief architect gathered around.

Everyone stared at the red circle drawn around the old wooden door.

Adi frowned.

"I've been to the east wing many times."

"I don't remember any hidden door."

Maan nodded.

"Neither do I."

The security chief adjusted his glasses.

"The east wing was demolished after the fire."

Geet looked up.

"What fire?"

The room fell silent.

She looked from one face to another.

"No one told you?"

Adi sighed.

"It happened three weeks after you left."

"The newspapers called it an electrical accident."

Maan spoke quietly.

"The east wing burned for nearly four hours."

"The damage was so severe that demolition became the only option."

Geet's heart sank.

Another event...

Connected to the time she disappeared.

Another piece of history no one had told her.

She slowly unfolded the photograph again.

"What if..."

Everyone looked at her.

"What if the fire wasn't an accident either?"

Silence.

Maan's eyes met hers.

For the first time...

Both of them reached the same conclusion.

Someone had been planning this for years.

By afternoon...

A government permit arrived allowing temporary excavation beneath the demolished east wing.

The heritage department insisted that any underground structure had to be documented before further construction.

Maan decided immediately.

"We're going today."

________________________________________

The eastern side of Khurana Mansion looked completely different from the rest of the estate.

Wild grass covered the abandoned land.

Old stone pillars lay scattered across the ground.

Nature had slowly reclaimed what had once been part of the mansion.

Geet walked slowly across the uneven surface.

"This place..."

she whispered.

"I don't even recognize it."

Maan stood beside her.

"It changed after you left."

Neither realized how painful those words sounded.

Engineers soon arrived with ground-penetrating scanners.

Within an hour...

One of the technicians looked up.

"Sir."

"We've found something."

Everyone hurried toward the monitor.

Beneath nearly twelve feet of earth...

A rectangular chamber appeared on the scan.

Adi blinked in disbelief.

"There's a basement?"

The technician nodded.

"It was completely sealed."

Maan looked at Geet.

"This wasn't in the mansion's official plans."

"No."

she replied.

"It was hidden."

Without wasting another minute, excavation began.

Heavy machinery carefully removed the top layers of soil while workers used hand tools closer to the structure.

Hours passed.

Finally...

A loud metallic sound echoed through the site.

"Sir!"

One worker shouted.

"We've found a staircase!"

Dust covered the ancient stone steps leading underground.

The entrance had been deliberately filled with concrete decades earlier.

As workers cleared the final debris...

An old iron door appeared.

Its surface was covered with rust.

At its center...

A silver lock.

Geet's heartbeat quickened.

"Maan..."

She looked at him.

"The key."

Without speaking, Maan reached into his coat pocket.

He slowly removed the silver key from the anonymous package.

Everyone watched silently.

The key fit perfectly into the lock.

A cold breeze escaped from inside the chamber as the mechanism clicked open.

The ancient door creaked loudly.

Darkness waited beyond.

The workers switched on their flashlights.

Maan picked up one torch.

"I'm going in."

"So am I."

Geet stepped beside him.

"No."

His voice became firm.

"It could be dangerous."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"You think I'm letting you go alone?"

Before he could argue, Dadima's voice echoed behind them.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

She had arrived with the family priest.

Looking at Maan and Geet, she smiled gently.

"For five years..."

she said,

"both of you walked through darkness alone."

She took one step closer.

"If this journey leads to the truth..."

she placed a hand on each of their shoulders,

"...then neither of you will walk it alone."

Maan looked at Geet.

She nodded.

Together...

They crossed the old iron doorway.

The air inside was damp and icy.

Cobwebs covered the stone walls.

Dust filled every corner.

Their flashlight beams swept slowly across the chamber.

Broken furniture.

Old paintings.

Wooden trunks.

It looked less like a basement...

And more like someone had hidden an entire part of history beneath the mansion.

Suddenly...

Geet stopped walking.

"Maan..."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

He turned his flashlight toward her.

She pointed at the far wall.

There...

Half-covered beneath years of dust...

Was a massive wooden door.

Exactly the same door...

That had been circled in red on the anonymous photograph.

The door was untouched.

Still locked.

And carved into the ancient wood were three words.

"Only Truth Enters."

A strange silence settled over the underground chamber.

Neither Maan nor Geet noticed...

From the darkness beyond the door...

A pair of unseen eyes was watching them.
