Day 4: Stumps - Sri Lanka need 288 runs

The visitors started the day with quick runs in mind and that's exactly how they proceeded for most of the innings. Only three batters reached double figures. KL Rahul (35) and Devdutt Padikkal (44) added 65 for the second wicket, but Rishabh Pant's breezy 66 really set them up. Sri Lanka bowled well for most of the innings, consistently attacking and chipping away to keep India to 191 in their second innings. But the overall lead was 371 and no team has chased that many runs in the 4th innings here at Galle. Nishan Fernando fell cheaply once again in the second innings. Concussion substitute Pasindu Sooriyabandara bagged a first-ball duck on debut, Kamindu chased one and edged Prasidh to slip while Lahiru Udara was probably a tad unlucky as he edged Suthar to gully. Dhananjaya de Silva was reprieved on 7 after being caught off a no-ball and he has hung on gamely. Sonal Dinusha has looked positive, but it's a still a long way to go for the hosts. As things stand, India need 6 wickets to go 1-0 up while the home team needs another 288 runs. That sets up a thrilling finish to this Test at Galle!!

After winning a crucial toss, India have been in a dominant position throughout the game. Rain has made an appearance every single day. And this is the current equation - India need 6 wickets | Sri Lanka need 288 runs. Indians coming out on top is the most likely result. The Islanders need something special even to salvage a draw. First things first, Prakash from Galle says, "Sun and clear skies at the moment here." But we can't guarantee that it will stay the same throughout the day. He adds: "Devdutt Padikkal and Yashasvi Jaiswal are bowling their off-spin on the side pitch. I've not spotted Dhruv Jurel yet. Scratch that, he's here now." ICYMI, Jurel took a blow to his ankle while fielding at short leg. He limped off the field and did not return for the remainder of Day 4.

While the pitch may not have deteriorated as much as it usually does in Galle, batting has certainly gotten trickier with time. Sonal, just like the first innings, has been compact against spin. DdS has been anything but that. However, he's still batting and that's the key for SL. Can this duo and Dickwella frustrate the Indians? Or will it be a straightforward victory for Gill's men? We'll find out shortly.

Credit to the curator for producing a sporting deck, and it's been a nice duel between bat and ball. Batters have had success - two centurions (DDP and Sonal Dinusha) and four half-centurions (Rahul, Jurel, Dickwella and Pant) - are a testament to it. And, there's also been sufficient assistance for the bowlers - both pacers and seamers. The spinners took the bulk of the wickets in the first two innings - 15 of the 20 wickets. The seamers, however, bowled with a lot of spirit and managed to take 8 out of the 14 wickets to fall yesterday.
