I also think there's a second part to this. Spain hasn't had to bring their A-game overall. Apart from Cape Verde giving them a run for their money, they mostly managed to do well in general in all their other games.
France, on the other hand, brought their A-game too early on. Either because they had harder games or because they don't know any better.
What this meant is that Spain could be ready for France with their A-game, but France had nothing else to bring out in this match.
I don't know if that makes sense, but the idea is that Spain knew what they were getting into but France did not.
