Eid Ul Adha falls on May 27th 2026 this year. Commonly called as Eid Al Kabeer or Bakra Eid, millions of muslims celebrate the second most important festival after Eid Ul Fitr, on the 10th day of the holy Month of Hajj (Dhul Hijjah).
Eid Ul Adha marks the end of the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca, which is one of the five pillars of Islam. Every year, millions of muslims perform Hajj as a symbol of self reflection, forgiveness and renewal. Fasting on the ninth day, Arafah, is highly recommended for the ones who couldn't go for the pilgrimage. It is believed that the fast expiates 2 years of sins and the believer gets immensely rewarded.
Eid Ul Adha finds it's orgin in the story of the Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him (Alayhi Salam).
Ibrahim AS was a devoted prophet, submitted to his Creator. After years of being childless, Allah blessed him with a lovely son Ismail, AS. The baby became the light of his eyes and his most precious treasure.
Following his Creator's commands, Ibrahim left his wife Hajar and his son Ismail in a desolated desert in Mecca. Hajar ran from one hill to another, seeking for help and food. Thus, out of despair and faith, a miracle happened and the Zamzam water flowed in the middle of the hot desert. This miraculous event became one of the symbols of the sacred pilgrimage.
Years later, when Ismail was grown up, his father saw a dream multiple times. He was seeing himself sacrificing his son. Ibrahim knew this was a command from his Creator. A verse in the Holy Quran sums up it as it follows :
"Then when they both had submitted, and he put him down upon his forehead, We called to him, 'O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision." (Qur'an37:103-105)
Ibrahim was tested by letting his son go. He didn't hesitate nor his son. Out of faith, Ibrahim was about to perform the act when Allah stepped in and substituted a ram for Ismail.
Muslims perform the act of Qurbani on Eid. It symbolizes Prophet Ibrahim's devotion and total surrender to Allah. It is about reviving the spirit of sacrifice in every Muslim's life, not just about sacrificing an animal. The Qurbani needs to follow strict rules so that the animal doesn't suffer.
Muslims around the world commemorate this day by offering the prayer of Eid and sharing the meat with their loved ones, neighbors, and the needy. It is a day to reflect on the virtues of sacrifice and surrender to Allah.
Muslims who are financially able to afford the Qurbani are required to offer it on Eid al-Adha.
The meat is divided into three parts: one-third for the family, one-third for relatives and friends and one-third for people with low incomes and needy.

Ibrahim and Ismail, both willing to accept Allah's command is a deep symbol of unbreakable faith towards one of the most terrifying moments for any parent, loosing his deary child.
FAMILY
Ismail and Hajar demonstrated remarkable faith. Ismail willingly accepted his fate, and Hajar ran tirelessly between the hills of Safa and Marwa, searching for water.
SACRIFICE
Hajj is a journey about sacrificing. Pilgrims leave their homes, dear ones and work towards a life changing journey.
Hajj teaches us to let go of our bad intentions, vices, worldly affairs and step into a path that streghtens our spiritual connection with the Almighty.
