Two of the most aggressive batting sides in the competition. A pitch that will not ask them to slow down. And skewed boundary dimensions that will allow even mishits to carry. It is not hard to see what Wednesday night's contest between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings on the famous Pitch #2 in Uppal is shaping up to be.

SRH and PBKS have been the two quickest-scoring sides in the Powerplay in IPL 2026, with both striking above 11.5 runs an over. And neither of the two teams ease off once the field spreads, sitting third and second respectively in terms of scoring in overs 7-15 as well. Add batters like Shreyas Iyer, Heinrich Klaasen, Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis into the mix, all four among the top-six most destructive death-over hitters since 2023, and the ingredients for a run-fest are firmly in place. SRH head coach Daniel Vettori even joked on the eve of the game that he was "very concerned" for the bowlers.

PBKS remain top of the table despite back-to-back losses but their bowling has looked the shakier half of an otherwise strong campaign. Given that taking wickets will be the hard currency in Hyderabad and one good over with the ball can be the difference in the end, this could be a good time and place for their bowling attack to step up. SRH, meanwhile, will look to move on from their collapse [105/1 to 165 all out] on a slower pitch against Kolkata Knight Riders. Back on a truer batting surface that better suits their all-out approach and without the Narine-Varun spin axis to contend with, they will expect to free their arms again.

When: Match 49, IPL 2026 on 6 May 2026 at 7:30 PM local

Where: Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad

What to expect: It's the pitch on which India famously piled up 297 against Bangladesh, and on which SRH have threatened to breach the 300-mark on so many occasions. The dimensions are likely to be 63 and 68 meters on either side, with a straight hit down the ground measuring 75 meters. The maximum temperature in the city has come down by a couple of degrees but chances of dew could be mitigated by a bit of cloud cover that's expected.

Head to head: SRH 17 - 8 PBKS (It's 9-1 in favour of SRH in Hyderabad)

Team Watch

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Injuries/Unavailability: Nitish Reddy missed out in the last match due to an illness but Vettori said the all-rounder is "feeling a lot better" and he "doesn't foresee a situation where he won't play tomorrow." Nitish wasn't spotted bowling during the practice session on match eve but he had a good hit with the bat on one of the centre practice wickets.

Tactics & Matchups: With Nitish not around, SRH had to make a flurry of changes to balance their side but expect them to go back to the combination that beat Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede. That said, they could stick with Harshal Patel, who has picked the wicket of Shreyas Iyer thrice in 19 balls. The medium pacer also has a good record against Stoinis.

Probable XII: Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan(wk), Heinrich Klaasen, Salil Arora, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Aniket Verma, Pat Cummins(c), Harsh Dubey, Sakib Hussain, Harshal Patel, Eshan Malinga

Punjab Kings

Injuries/Unavailability: Brad Haddin said Shashank Singh, who missed the last two matches, was their only availability concern. "It looks like Shashank will run around and do everything today," Haddin said on match eve. "That's our only concern from a fitness point of view, [otherwise] we've got all our squad available now. And Shashank will have his last hit out today and hopefully that goes exactly how we think it will go."

Tactics & Matchups: Arshdeep Singh might not be having the best of IPLs but he will be a key bowler against SRH's batters. The left-arm pacer has a favourable matchup against Travis Head (4 dismissals), Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen (3 dismissals each). Also expect Yuzvendra Chahal to be brought on for Ishan Kishan, whom he's picked thrice.

Probable XII: Prabhsimran Singh(wk), Priyansh Arya, Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer(c), Marcus Stoinis, Suryansh Shedge, Nehal Wadhera, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Vijaykumar Vyshak

In the spotlight: Malinga, Arshdeep and Jansen

Eshan Malinga is the only frontline bowler to have played all ten matches for SRH. He started the season with three wickets at an average of 41.67. Since then, though, Malinga has taken 12 wickets at 16.75. He's SRH's highest wicket-taker, and has got the ball to tail in late. Malinga was one of the key drivers of SRH's resurgence. He was expensive and wicketless against KKR, and SRH lost. But Malinga will look to hit back in Hyderabad, where he averages 16.40 in comparison to 21.73 elsewhere.

Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen's lack of returns have hurt PBKS. Among all bowlers to have bowled at least 180 balls this season, Jansen has the second-fewest wickets (six) while Arshdeep has been the most expensivewith an economy of 10.38. In PBKS' run to the final last year, they had combined to take 37 wickets at an average of 25.73. So far this time, Arshdeep and Jansen's numbers read 16 wickets at 40.13. While PBKS' batters have been piling up huge totals, they will need some backing from the two experienced quicks.

Pitch and conditions

On pitch no. 2, the average score in night matches across IPL 2024 and 2025 is 200, with a 3-2 record batting first. In the only game this season, SRH posted 242 against Delhi Capitals and won by 47 runs. PBKS, meanwhile, have won five of their six matches while chasing this season. So both teams could get their way at the toss. It rained on the eve of the match, and it's expected to be cloudy in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Did you know?

What they said

"In a lot of ways, they [PBKS] are like us. They are very aggressive with the bat and then they try and mitigate anything with the ball. You would anticipate a high scoring game and it's on the bowling units to deal with that pressure." - Daniel Vettori, SRH head coach

"Arshdeep understands the flow of tournament play... You want your best players performing in the important games at the back end of the tournament but there will be days when, for the bowlers, it becomes pretty hard work. But we're happy with where he's at. He's world class." - Brad Haddin, PBKS assistant coach
