Chapter 2: Whispers in the Dark

The cottage stood silent.

Too silent.

A strange stillness hung in the air—as if time itself had slowed down the moment they stepped inside.

It didn’t feel abandoned.

It felt… paused.

“Okay… this place is way too fancy to be abandoned,” Bharat muttered, his voice echoing slightly as he looked around.

Wooden chandeliers hung from the ceiling, their intricate carvings catching the dim light. Antique furniture stood perfectly in place, untouched by dust. A faint scent lingered in the air—old, yet not decayed.

Almost like memories.

“Exactly,” Vishakha added, hugging herself. “If this place is empty, why does it feel like someone just left?”

“Guys, stop it,” Neha said nervously. “You’re making it creepy.”

“Creepy?” Sharon smirked, flipping her hair. “Please. It’s just an old cottage.”

But even she couldn’t ignore the chill that brushed against her skin like invisible fingers.

Dividing Rooms

“Let’s just settle in for the night,” Swayam said, his tone calm but firm. “We’ll leave first thing in the morning.”

No one argued.

They all felt it.

Something was off.

Rooms were quickly divided:

• Boys: Rey, Swayam, Vicky, Bharat, Amar, Nilesh

• Girls: Kriya, Sharon, Neha, Vishakha, Rimmi, Simmi

And then—

“I’ll take that room,” Antara said, pointing to one closer to the boys’ side.

Closer to Rey.

Of course.

Kriya noticed.

Her fingers tightened slightly around her bag.

But she said nothing.

Just looked away.

The First Sign

As everyone began moving upstairs—

Creeaaak…

The staircase groaned loudly under their weight.

Rey paused.

His brows furrowed.

“Did you hear that?”

“Hear what?” Vicky replied casually.

Rey hesitated.

It didn’t sound like wood.

It sounded like…

Footsteps.

Behind them.

Slow.

Dragging.

He turned sharply.

Nothing.

Just an empty hallway staring back at him.

He exhaled. “Nothing.”

But the uneasiness didn’t leave.

It settled deep inside his chest.

Girls’ Room

The girls entered a large room, dimly lit and strangely cold.

Two beds stood against the wall, with extra mattresses scattered nearby.

“Okay, I call this side!” Simmi declared, jumping onto one of the beds.

“Obviously,” Vishakha rolled her eyes.

Their laughter filled the room briefly.

But it didn’t last.

Kriya stood near the window.

The wind had grown stronger.

The curtains fluttered wildly now, almost violently.

She wrapped her arms around herself.

That feeling again.

That pull.

That whisper she couldn’t hear… but could feel.

“Kriya?” Sharon walked up to her. “Where are you lost?”

Kriya didn’t look at her.

“Do you feel it?” she asked softly.

“Feel what?”

Kriya hesitated.

“I don’t know… it just feels like… we were supposed to come here.”

Sharon frowned. “Don’t start. It’s just a coincidence.”

But even she couldn’t stop herself from glancing at the door.

For a second—

She thought she saw something move outside.

She quickly shut it.

“Let’s just sleep,” she said.

Boys’ Room

Meanwhile, the boys’ room was filled with chaos.

“Best unexpected trip ever!” Amar shouted, jumping onto the bed.

“Yeah, until a ghost shows up,” Nilesh joked.

“Shut up!” Bharat threw a pillow at him.

Laughter echoed.

But Rey sat quietly at the edge of his bed.

Lost.

“Kriya…” he whispered unconsciously.

Swayam noticed immediately.

“Still running away?” he asked, leaning against the wall.

Rey sighed. “I don’t know what to say to her.”

“Try the truth.”

Rey gave a faint smile. “Sounds easy when you say it.”

Swayam smirked. “That’s because I’m smarter than you.”

Rey was about to reply—

Knock.

Everything stopped.

The room fell silent.

They all stared at the door.

“Who is it?” Swayam called.

No response.

Vicky walked toward the door slowly and opened it.

Nothing.

The corridor was empty.

“Nice joke,” he muttered.

But as he turned—

Creeeak…

The door slowly closed on its own.

No one touched it.

No wind.

Nothing.

“Okay… that was not funny,” Amar whispered.

Rey and Swayam exchanged a look.

This wasn’t normal.

Antara’s Room

Antara stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her hair.

A smile played on her lips.

“Rey…” she whispered dreamily.

Suddenly—

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then dimmed.

Her smile faded.

“Hello? Is anyone there?”

No answer.

Then—

The mirror fogged up.

Slowly.

As if someone had just breathed on it.

Right behind her.

Antara froze.

Her heartbeat echoed in her ears.

And then—

Letters began to form.

One by one.

Slow.

Deliberate.

L E A V E

Her breath hitched.

“What the hell?!” she gasped, stumbling back.

She rushed to the door and flung it open.

The corridor was empty.

But she felt it.

That presence.

Close.

Too close.

Like someone had just stepped away from her.

Watching.

Midnight

The clock struck twelve.

And the cottage changed.

The air grew heavier.

Thicker.

Unnatural.

No wind.

No insects.

No sound.

Just silence.

Kriya

Kriya’s eyes snapped open.

Her breathing uneven.

Her heart racing.

She looked around.

Everyone was asleep.

But something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Then—

A whisper.

Soft.

Broken.

“Kriya…”

Her blood ran cold.

She sat up slowly.

“Who’s there?”

Silence.

Again—

“Kriya…”

Closer this time.

Right outside the door.

Without thinking—

She stood up.

And walked toward it.

As if something invisible was pulling her.

Rey

At the same moment—

Rey’s eyes opened abruptly.

He sat up, breathing heavily.

“Kriya…”

He didn’t know how.

He didn’t know why.

But he felt it.

Like she needed him.

Right now.

He stood up immediately.

“I’ll be back,” he muttered.

“Where—” Swayam began.

But Rey was already gone.

The Corridor

Kriya stepped into the corridor.

Her movements slow.

Unsteady.

Like she wasn’t fully in control.

The lights flickered as she walked.

“Kriya…”

The whisper echoed again.

Calling her.

Guiding her.

She followed it.

Toward the staircase.

Upstairs.

The Shadow

At the top—

Something stood.

A shadow.

Tall.

Still.

Watching her.

Kriya stopped.

Her voice trembled.

“Who… are you?”

The shadow didn’t respond.

It simply stepped back.

As if inviting her.

Closer.

Rey Arrives

“KRIYA!”

Rey’s voice shattered the silence.

Kriya turned.

Her trance broke instantly.

“Rey…?”

And then—

The shadow moved.

Fast.

Violent.

The lights went out.

Darkness swallowed everything.

Kriya screamed.

Rey ran forward blindly—

And caught her.

“Don’t let go!” she cried, clutching him tightly.

“I’m here,” he said firmly. “I’m not going anywhere.”

The lights flickered back.

The corridor was empty.

No shadow.

No presence.

Nothing.

Except—

The cold.

Still there.

Realization

Footsteps rushed up the stairs.

“What happened?!” Sharon asked, panic clear in her voice.

Kriya clung to Rey, trembling.

“There was… someone,” she whispered.

Rey tightened his hold on her hand.

“I saw it too.”

Silence fell.

No jokes.

No laughter.

Because now—

They all felt it.

The truth.

They weren’t alone.

Final Scene

Somewhere deep inside the cottage…

Hidden behind a locked door…

A faint creak echoed.

The door opened slightly.

Inside—

Old photographs lay scattered across a dusty table.

One picture slid slowly to the floor.

It showed—

A girl.

Standing near the same cottage.

Her face…

Identical to Kriya.

And beside her—

A shadow.

Dark.

Undefined.

Waiting.

Scratched beneath the photo were the words:

“YOU CAME BACK.”
