Fortunately - regarding the current scrutinizing of older movies' content regarding the presentation of characters focussing on their religion - Koyla doesn't have one Muslim character (if I remember rightly)... and also no mention of Pakistan.

Vividly remember the discussion among us neighbourhood kids when this movie was released . The gist was " kya local dikhayi hai " .

this film was really huge in Africa, I remember traveling different countries in late 90's and 2000's it was soo popular there
