A high-stakes encounter awaits as Mumbai Indians take on Punjab Kings in Match 24 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on April 16.

Mumbai Indians have endured a challenging start to their campaign this season. With just one win in their first four matches, the five-time IPL champions find themselves struggling for momentum and consistency. The likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma will need to step up if MI are to turn their fortunes around at their home.

Punjab Kings, on the other hand, have looked like one of the more settled and in-form sides in IPL 2026. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, PBKS have showcased a strong all-round performance, securing three victories in four games so far. Their batting unit has fired consistently, while the bowling attack has delivered in crunch moments. With confidence on their side, Punjab will be eager to continue their winning run and strengthening their position on the points table.

Adding further spice to this contest is their recent history. PBKS got the better of MI in the 2025 Qualifier 2, and with the head-to-head record evenly poised, this clash promises to be another closely fought battle.

With the Wankhede known for its batting-friendly conditions and short boundaries, fans can expect a high-scoring thriller.

Big picture: Can MI match PBKS's batting firepower?

How the ways part.

Since Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings(PBKS) last met in the second Qualifier last year, when the two teams weren't too far apart, they have taken completely different paths. If PBKS have smashed their way to second spot (before Wednesday's game) and are the only unbeaten team of IPL 2026 so far, MI have slipped down to second from bottom, with issues plaguing both their batting and bowling departments.

The Mumbai man who saw PBKS through to knock MI out last year - Shreyas Iyer - will turn out at his home ground on Thursday and he has led his team's batting surge of late. PBKS have the second-best run rate (10.05) and balls-per-sixes ratio (8.70) of any team, only behind RCB on both counts, and a defining feature of the standards they are setting is their refusal to slow down even when wickets fall.

Statistically, they have been attacking pace a lot more than spin which bodes well for them at Wankhede, where the red soil makes pace bowling come on the bat nicely and spinners typically play a peripheral role.

MI's batters needs to step up big time - they are lagging behind currently - as the last thing they would want is their opposition showing them how to bat at Wankhede. The first thing they would want is to end two streaks: they have lost three in a row since winning their opening game, and PBKS are yet to drop a match.

Preview:

Jasprit Bumrah will be hoping his long, barren stretch comes full circle on Thursday night. It had started last year with the Mumbai Indians' game (Qualifier 2) against Punjab Kings, the opposition that MI will be up against at the Wankhede Stadium.

For more than 20 overs (122 deliveries, to be precise), Bumrah has gone wicketless in the IPL - statistically the longest zero-yield stretch in T20 cricket for him. It may not be long before he returns among the wickets, and the opposition in this game could well provide him with the much-needed breakthrough for the season.

Notwithstanding the lack of wickets, Bumrah has not been ineffective or expensive. However, his lean phase is not the only concern for Mumbai Indians. An in-form opener sidelined with injury; the middle order not exactly firing; an overseas pacer - usually a breakthrough specialist - conceding runs at 12.22 an over, well above his career rate of 8.46; and the spinners being profligate, leaking runs like a broken tap, MI have often looked like a bull charging after the matador in a bullring - full of intent, but never quite landing the decisive blow.

MI have too many holes to patch before opponents begin to fully exploit their weaknesses. Of particular concern is the middle order. Suryakumar Yadav (106), Tilak Varma (35), Hardik Pandya (67), Sherfane Rutherford (101) and even Naman Dhir (59) have had modest returns in a season where, as captain Pandya admits, Mumbai Indians are playing catch-up. The team is slipping in the race for a top-four finish, and the onus will be on the middle order - particularly Tilak, a World Cup winner who has been totally out of sorts in the first four games.

Punjab Kings, on the other hand, are firing on all cylinders and operating at peak efficiency. The Shreyas Iyer-led side is the only unbeaten team in the league so far and the only one among the original eight to boast an equal (17-17) or superior (3-2 in the last five games) head-to-head record against the five-time champions. Iyer himself has stood out for his versatility and incisive captaincy. His move to introduce Shashank Singh's gentle medium pace to stymie Sunrisers Hyderabad's batting momentum the other day proved a masterstroke.

"A good winning record against a team carries momentum forward. We are in a very positive frame of mind and have a clear understanding of their plans. Having done well against them in the past is an added advantage that we want to carry into this game as well," Wadhera, who played for MI a couple of seasons ago, said heaping praise of captain Iyer and coach Ponting for the unbeaten record in the season.

On paper, the PBKS juggernaut could prove too strong for MI to halt but they are not five-time champions for nothing. And then they also have a determined Bumrah who would be keen to end his prolonged lull. After all, he is not, arguably, the best bowler in the world for nothing.

MI vs PBKS: Probable Best Performers of the Match

Probable Best Batter: Priyansh Arya

The dashing left-hander from Punjab Kings has been in tremendous form, batting breathtakingly well. Priyansh Arya, on a flat Wankhede wicket, will be a dangerous prospect. He possesses a batting strike-rate of 264.10 in IPL 2026.

Probable Best Bowler: Jasprit Bumrah

It has been a disappointing season for Jasprit Bumrah so far. In MI’s first four matches, their premier pacer has gone wicketless, and that has hampered their chances of winning. But on flat wickets like Wankhede, having a bowler like Bumrah is a huge bonus, who can give his side game-changing economical spells.

Data says a sorry story. MI has lost its mojo man.

Will Rohit Sharma play?

Rohit Sharma has been struggling with a hamstring injury and is unlikely to take the field tonight against Punjab Kings. Quinton de Kock could replace him at the top of the order.

Yuzvendra Chahal key for Punjab

Yuzvendra Chahal will be key for Punjab Kings tonight in their clash against the Mumbai Indians. He also has a stellar record against MI captain Hardik Pandya.

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians will be desperate to return to winning ways after losing three games on the trot as they take on Punjab Kings in match no. 24 of the IPL 2026 season at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. After their winning their opening match of the season for the first time since 2012, MI have lost three successive matches as they take on unbeaten PBKS side at home.

Shreyas Iyer’s PBKS have not lost a single match this season and they only dropped one point after their game against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in Kolkata was washed out due to rain. A win for IPL 2025 finalists will propel them to the top of the Points Table on Thursday with nine points.

One of the biggest concerns for Mumbai Indians is the fitness of their former skipper Rohit Sharma. The MI opener retired hurt with a hamstring injury in their last match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at home on Sunday. Rohit underwent a fitness test with a heavily strapped thigh on Wednesday and also batted in the nets but a final call on his participation will be taken at the toss.

Surya to fire?

Mumbai Indians need their big gun Suryakumar Yadav to fire as so far they have been struggling to perform with the bat apart from the season opener they played.
