To be honest, MJTY is a hard watch. Not just MJTY, all dramas from the director (FoF and VoS) are hard to watch 
but because of Gong Shangjue and Shanguan Qian MJTY is on my most favorite list! I just never get enough of them 
I'll play favorites if you ask me in terms of the female general role, I'd say you go for Legend of the Female General. With 3 dramas with female generals last year Song Yi (Shadow Love) and Li Qin (Fated Hearts) were heavily criticized while Zhou Ye looks better in comparison.
Shadow Love is a good drama if you want to watch Cheng Lei's acting range. He pulled 3 roles in one drama. But this has supernatural elements and the best dressed character of him barely comes for 8-9 eps out of 38 eps.
I'm a little biased towards LOTFG cuz it's based on one of my favorite novels even though they changed many things from the novel I'm still biased
