Movie going hadn't been a 'luxury' then but belonged to the affordable pleasures of daily life.
One should not compare the times of Multiplex-chains with the times of single screen theatres and travelling cinema, imo. Basic costs could be counted in single digits, too.

One should really look at numbers in relation to other numbers... if movie tickets now get priced with 1500 rs, it isn't very astonishing to get high box office numbers...
