LAKSHMANA

Other names- Lakshman, Laxman,

brother ,close companion ,invincible warrior, good engineer and architect

Lakshman was the great brother and close companion of Ram, and himself a hero in the famous epic Ramayan. Lakshman is considered to be an avatar in a secondary form to Ram main appearance. Lakshman was an incarnation of Sheshnaga, the divine serpent that supports Vishnu while he reclines. Just as Sheshnag is always close to Vishnu so too Lakshman is always by Ram side.

Lakshman is the twin brother of Shatrughn, born in Ayodhya to Sumitra, the third wife of Dasarath.

Lakshman was completely devoted to Ram and stayed close to him like a living shadow. He was always resolute in his thought and firm in action and was thus named Lakshman by sage Vashishth.

The four brothers were taught by the family guru Vashishth, learning tenets of politics, ethics, law and warfare. The boys were virtuous, noble and well mannered and were therefore very popular .

In Siddhashram, Guru Vishwamitr was conducting a yagna. Some wicked demons like Tadaka, Mareech and Subahu were disturbing the proceedings and polluting the holy ritual. Hapless, Sage Vishwamitr went to King Dashrath and requested him to send Ram and Lakshman to assist him. But Dashrath at first said that the boys were too young and offered to come instead. But Vishwamitr was adamant. King Dashrath was quite disturbed to think of his tender-aged sons facing cruel rakshasas but he was also wary of inviting the wrath and possible curse of Vishwamitr. Guru Vashishth explained to the king that it would be auspicious to send the two princes with Vishwamitr and so Dashrath agreed to do so.

On the way, sage Vishwamitr gave them invaluable lessons in archery and gifted them his divine powers of warfare. As they were about to reach the ashram, Rakshasi Tadaka attacked them. On instruction from the sage, Ram killed her at once. When they reached Siddhashram Ram and Lakshman requested sage Vishwamitr to start his yagna while they kept guard. As soon as the ritual started, Subahu and Mareech attacked them. Ram aimed a featherless shaft at Mareech that threw him at a distance of 100 yojanas by the sea. And Subahu was killed on the spot. Vishwamitr performed and completed his yagna uninterrupted.

At that time Janak, the king of Mithila was organizing a bow sacrifice to choose a suitable groom for his daughter. He had vowed that he would wed Sita to the man who could pick up the mighty unmovable bow of Shiv. This had not been picked by any man, deva or danava to date. Sage Vishwamitr had been invited for the bow sacrifice and took the two princes with him to Janakpuri.

Vishwamitr and the two princes received a warm welcome when they reached Janakpuri and Vishwamitr introduced Ram and Lakshman to Janak

When Ram marries Sita, Lakshman married the younger sister of Sita named Urmila

To obey Ram and to serve him, this was his goal in life. Kaikeyi, his stepmother asked two boons from Dashrath, an exile of fourteen years for Ram and the throne for her son Bharat. When Ram prepared to leave for the forest, Lakshman insisted on going too, leaving with ease the comfort and luxury of the palace. He even tore himself away from the loving care of his mother and the affection of his newly wedded wife Urmila, to serve Rama and Sita.

when Laxman went to Urmila and told her that he was going to the forest to serve Ram and Sita.when she asked Laxman to take her to the forest laxman explained her that he will be going there to serve Ram and Sita and he cannot take Urmila with him. So she wisely decided to stay back so that under no circumstances would Laxman be distracted from his service. She even extracted a promise from her husband that he would cease to think or worry about her and instead concentrate on looking after the welfare of Ram and Sita. Hence, she gave the courage to her husband and sent him with her full support. She live up to her role of being a "Dharampatni" by helping her husband tread the path of righteousness.

Ram, Lakshman and Sita stayed in simple huts in Chitrakoot

Early in their exile, when Bharat enters the forest with the royal entourage to persuade Ram to return to rule Ayodhya, Lakshmana initially mistakes his intentions; he jumps to the conclusion that the former was approaching with malicious intent. Rama, however, knows of Bharata's love for him and explains to Lakshmana that Bharata would never try to harm them

In the forest, while Ram rested Lakshman stayed awake the whole night keeping watch to protect Ram and Sita in the dangerous and dark surrounding. He followed Brahmacharya (the vow of celibacy) for fourteen years in the forest and spent his day serving Ram and Sita and his nights watching over them.

Lakshman, who turns out to be a good engineer and architect, building nice cosy huts for the couple wherever they go. In the forest strange and wonderful creatures and beings live.Lakshman accompanying them on tiring journeys and long passages of lonely forest life without complaint or care for himself.

in Panchavati that Ravan sister Shoorpanakha saw Ram and was besotted by him. She turned herself from a hideous demoness to a lovely damsel and proposed to Ram. He said, I have my wife with me. So Shoorpanakha tried to woo Lakshman who also rejected her advances. Enraged, she took on her hideous form and began to scare Sita. Lakshman cut off her nose and ears in anger.

When Sita asks Ram to fetch the golden deer for her, Ram asks Lakshman to guard Sita and their home, and to take special care since he felt bad omens and sensed danger and evil. The golden deer is in fact the demon Mareech, who must distract Ram and Lakshman away from the hut so as to allow Ravan to kidnap Sita.

When Ram kills the deer, even as he is dying, Maricha cries out in Ram own voice, crying for Sita and Lakshman to help him. Although Lakshman knows that Ram is invincible and beyond any danger, Sita panics and frantically orders Lakshman to go to Ram aid immediately. Unable to disobey the frightened and panicky Sita, and genuinely beginning to fear for Ram safety, Lakshman goes out to search for him. He however uses his mystical power to draw the Lakshman Rekha a perimeter line across the hut that Sita must not cross, and no other being save Lakshman or Ram may enter uninvited. If any intruder enters, it will be instantly killed.

Sita however, out of compulsion of religious duty and compassion for a poor brahmin, who is actually the disguised Ravan, crosses the line to give him alms. Thus Ravan is safely able to seize Sita.

Meanwhile when Ram saw Lakshman approaching, he was at once wary that something was amiss. Both brothers returned to Panchavati and found Sita missing from the hut. With a heavy heart and tearful eyes, Ram set out to look for Sita. He met Jatayu on the way who told them how Ravan had wounded him while trying to rescue Sita from his clutches and that Ravan was headed in the southern direction. While going south, Ram and Lakshman met a huge demon Kabandh who had his mouth in his enormous stomach and arms that stretched for miles. He clutched the brothers in his hands but they deftly chopped his arms off and killed him. On dying, he was converted to a gandharva. He told Ram to go to Rishyamukha mountain, to sage Matang ashram where his aged devotee Shabari was waiting for his arrival.

When Sita jewels were given back by Sugriva to Ram, Ram lamented Sita absence, remembering the jewels she used to wear. Lakshaman then gave Sita toe-ring to Rama in order to aid his grief. What was implied is that he has never looked beyond the toe of sita

in war Meghnad captured Lakshman in a Nagpash, serpentine noose. Devraja Indra sent Garud to free him. The next day Meghnad used Shakti weapon to make Lakshman unconscious. Hanuman brought Sanjeevani from the Himalayas and saved Lakshman life. Later in the battle, Lakshman fights and kills Indrajit. His killing of Indrajit was considered to be an important turning point of the war, as the latter was almost invincible, having overpowered Indra, the king of Heaven himself. Ahiravan was Ravan son who lived in Patal Inspired by Ravan, he made Ram and Lakshman unconscious in the night and carried them away to Patal. He was going to sacrifice them to the goddess. However, Hanuman arrived there and killed Ahiravan and rescued Ram and Lakshman.

Lakshman is considered a powerful warrior nearly equal to Rama. In the war against Ravan and his army of rakshas, Lakshman slays thousands of powerful demons such as Atikay and Prahast, Ravan chief commanders, and his son Indrajit Meghnad. With Rama, he also slays Kumbhakarn, the great giant rakshasa.

when Ravan was killed in war Ram sent Lakshman to arrange for the coronation of Vibhishan as king of Lanka. Surrounded by vanara guards, Sita was brought before Rama. He asked her to give a proof of hear purity. So Sita sat on a pyre prepared by Lakshman and gave an Agni pariksha, which left her untouched, as she was pure.

Fourteen years later, when Ram has been successfully reinstated on the throne and Lakshman is serving him at the court, Sita reminds Ram that Laksman should be advised to go visit his wife, who is still suffering to meet his husband.

Ram intended to crown Laxman the Yuvraj, or Crown Prince after his own coronation, Lakshman pointed out that Bharat great virtues and years of experience as Ayodhya administrator qualified him better, and thus he was immediately made Yuvaraj by Ram.

when Ram give up Sita to end any controversy . Ram told Lakshman to take Sita to the forest and leave her there. At that time Sita was pregnant. With a sad heart, Lakshman obeyed Ram command and left Sita near Valmiki ashram

Ram was busy organizing an Ashwamegh Yag to declare his supremacy. Led by Lakshman, the horse roamed in all direction and reached Valmiki ashram. Luv Kush caught hold of the horse.

The entire army of Ram and Lakshman was defeated by the two boys in combat and Lakshman . When Ram expressed a desire to know more about the boys, Valmiki urged them to go to Ayodhya and sing the Ram Katha in court and forbade them from accepting any reward or present.

When Sita appealed to mother earth. "You are the one who gave me birth. You are the witness to my purity. If I have been true to Ram in thought, word and deed, may the earth part and accept me in her lap."

Lakshman stops Ram, calms him down, explains to him that the world is not responsible for their separation from Sita, and consoles and encourages his righteous brother, while giving him support and strength.

Lakshman formed a settlement of Lakshamanavati or Laxshmanpur present day Lucknow but he always live in ayodhya to serve Ram

Lakshman had two sons Angad and Chitraketu. Angad was assigned Karupath and Chitraketu Malladesh's Chandraga puri.

When Kaal came disguised as a sage to meet Ram. He put a condition that no body should enter that room as long Kaal was there or else, the intruder should be given death punishment. Ram trusted his brother Lakshman more than any person. Therefore, Ram called Lakshman and asked him to stand at the door He also said that nobody should be allowed to enter that room or else the intruder would be given death punishment.

Lakshman did the same.At that time Sage Durvasa came and wanted to meet Ram. Remebering Ram's orders, Laxman requested Durvasa to wait. Durvasa got angry and threatened that he would curse the entire family of Raghukul. Lakshman thought, "It is better for me to get death punishment than so many people getting cursed." He went inside and informed Ram about Durvasa arrival. By that time, Kaal had finished talking to Ram. Ram asked Lakshman to bring Durvasa with respect. Kaal left and Durvasa entered. Ram provided hospitality to Durvasa. Durvasa went satisfied. Then Ram was very sad because he had to give death punishment to his dear brother Lakshman Vashishth and other sages suggested to Ram than banishing Lakshman would be equivalent to death for him. Laxman heard this. Without saying anything to anybody and without even meeting anybody, he went to river Saryu and entered it.

Lakshman is part of the Mariyada Purshottamm, or The Perfect Man personified by Ram, by his unswerving loyalty, love and commitment to his elder brother through times of joy and adversity alike. He is an invincible warrior committed to virtue and the service of his brother. He never covets the throne of Ayodhya, nor hesitates from joining his brother in exile, even though he does not have to.

Lakshman is revered for his absolute devotion to Ram. His performance of his duties as a younger brother is considered to be a sacrifice and superiority of character as such duties are especially hard to do in adverse conditions. Lakshman life symbolizes the duties of a man to his elders and superiors, and how greatly valued is seflessness in a man's character.

While he is generally considered to be rather short-tempered when compared to Ram, Lakshman is also considered an important element of Mariyada Purushottama, displaying great courage and presence of mind when Rama becomes distraught, angry and desperate over the loss of Sita Lakshman consoles and encourages Ram, while giving him support and strength .

It is impossible to narrate the glory of Ram,or Ramayana without describing the fraternal love, valor, devotion and sacrifice of Lakshman. He lived for Ram and died for Ram. This is the sum total of Lakshman character. Wherever there is a temple dedicated to Ram and Sita, there is always place for Lakshman too.

It was dwapar yug when vishnu decided to take avtar of krishna. when sheshnag came to know this he urged to vishnu that he also like to take birth as his brother. he said that in vishnu's other avtar he really missed to serve him. but in his ram avtar he learned what he lost in other avtar(when vishnu took birth alone). vishnuji agreed but sheshnag asked his permission to take birth as his elder brother. he said that in his ram avtar when keikai and ayodhya's people made injustice to him(ram). lakshman din't did anything because ram stooped him. being his younger brother laksman had to follow his orders and bound to let injustice happen to him.only because of ram he stopped himself. this time he want to be his elder brother because he would not be bound to such brotherly laws and would give lesson to such people.
lord vishnu agreed and sheshnag became balram elder brother of sri krishna.
