As the countdown to the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) enters its final week, the usual pre-tournament euphoria has been tempered by a string of high-profile withdrawals. Set to commence on March 28, the league is grappling with an “Injury XI" that could arguably challenge any international side. From World Cup-winning captains to premier fast bowlers, the list of absentees is extensive, forcing franchises to dive deep into their scouting networks to find the next “overnight hero".

While the loss of established stars is a blow to the commercial glamour of the opening weekend, it creates a unique vacuum. In the history of the IPL, some of the greatest legends—from Hardik Pandya to Jasprit Bumrah—effectively found their footing only because a senior player was sidelined.

The most significant jolts have come to the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders camps. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, the Australian duo who commanded record-breaking fees in previous auctions, have both been ruled out of the opening stages. Cummins is reportedly managing a persistent back niggle following a gruelling international summer, while Starc has been advised rest to recuperate from a heel injury.

Their absence leaves a massive void in the “death overs" specialist category. Furthermore, the Chennai Super Kings are sweating over the availability of their overseas bowling core. With both Nathan Ellis and Matthew Short officially withdrawn due to personal reasons and regional commitments, the defending champions are suddenly looking thin in their middle-order backup and pace variety.

KKR Captain Ajinkya Rahane Delivers Big Statement On 'Pressure' After Lowest IPL Finish In 16 Years

Ajinkya Rahane is set to lead Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2026, hoping to bounce back from an eighth-place finish in the previous season.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season desperate to bounce back after recording their joint-lowest finish in the previous campaign. In 2025, under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, KKR slumped to an 8th-place finish, falling well short of the playoffs. Now 37, Rahane has been retained as skipper for a second season by the three-time champions, and opened up on the pressure of leading the side off the back of its unsuccessful 2025 season.

"Every year, there are different challenges as a player and also as captain. What I've learnt is to be positive, each and every time. Really grateful to the franchise that they've given me this responsibility to lead the team," said Rahane in response to a question by NDTV, in an exclusive interaction facilitated by JioStar.

"Taking everything in my stride. When there are challenges, you always look at opportunities. My mindset has always been like that in my career - when I see challenges or difficulties, I try to look at them in a positive way, as a player and also as a captain," he added.
