Shagun was already bad. Now her backstabbing Shagun whose reality she doesn’t know fully is like the last nail in coffin for me because she’s supposed to be the good person. All the time she’s either crying or interfering and thinks she knows best than the child’s parents. I only feel bad for Raman and Ruhi

I guess it depends on how you look at things. You find her annoying but many related to her as a woman who doesn’t have any stakes in the game whatsoever and yet ends up being used as a pawn by Ashok and Shagun against Raman courtesy of them finding out how she has had an antagonistic relationship with him so far. Raman owes her no explanations whatsoever but she could have also simply been cruel and let Shagun keep Ruhi for the sake of ego and petty rivalry. There are no dearth of cases these days where minor arguments escalate to extreme violence even between complete strangers after all.

She certainly could have taken another route wherein she doesn’t do anything and lets the chips fall as they may but she puts her own life at stake there as I mentioned above for her love of Ruhi which she certainly didn’t need to do but she does just for the sake of experiencing what motherhood feels like, something that has been denied to her for no fault of hers. There was no need for her to love a child that belonged to someone else so deeply but it happens and she can’t help herself. Eventually it is she who also makes sure that Raman is able to move past his trauma and provide Ruhi with the love she deserves and needs from her father too.

Backstabbing Shagun about what ? For Ishita it was only about Ruhi's future and when she realised that Shagun is not what she portrayed to be she changed her mind..It was Ruhi herself who chose Ishita over her biological parents in the court and that's when both Mr Iyer n Mr Bhalla started hatching for IshRa wedding..She was a good person that's why she saved Ruhi from going to a person who abandoned her when she was 6 months old to sleep with her boyfriend by cheating on Raman and never bothered about her till 6 years later for custody that too was to humiliate Raman..Shagun manipulated Ishita by showing herself as saint when she wasn't so when Ishita realised that Shagun isn't saint she changed her mind..How did she snatched a child that was already abandoned by her mother for years ?

Shagun deserved Ruhi over Raman ? Ishita choosing to marry Raman over giving Ruhi to Shagun isn't wrong since she saw that Shagun wanted to send Ruhi to boarding school even if it was for temporary time..Also she did saw that Ruhi was always with her nanny rather than with Shagun..Also Ruhi herself chose Ishita over Raman n Shagun in the court..I mean Shagun can manipulate Ishita but Ishita can't marry Raman for Ruhi whom she didn't even loved..Shagun konsi achi maa thi..left behind her 6 month old kid to sleep around by cheating on her husband and never cared for ruhi to even if Ishita did anything with Shagun it was worth watching n fully deserved to be..Ishita actually did good with Raman n Ruhi..

Ok I read the last part of your last post again. I was in hurry reading your post in the morning as I was outside. You are right she does risk her life too for Ruhi. I didn’t realize that part. I was annoying at her betraying a mother as that is extremely cruel since she doesn’t know yet that Shagun wants Ruhi just to impress Ashok or Ashok is abusive towards Ruhi, but I can kind of get past that now knowing that she kind of doesn’t care about her life too and loves Ruhi selflessly. That helps me tolerate her better. Thank you for making me see that as now I can watch her and show better without being annoyed at her lol smiley27

Thank you for taking my POV into consideration despite it being different than yours to begin with.

Honestly on the YHM forum at the time the show aired I made a lot of great friends and we never had a single conversation where anyone felt the least bit sorry for Shagun. It was considered a given from day one that biology alone never makes someone a mother, especially if you can walk out on your child like that.

See, Devki Maa had to let go of Krishna almost as soon as the umbilical cord was cut, but in her case we don’t say that she isn’t a mother because she let her child go. What she did required extraordinary strength and the capacity to endure so much more for the greater good of the world. She had already lost 7 children for no fault of hers and was willing to give away her 8th so that no one else suffers thanks to her son. She stayed in that prison waiting for the day her son would slay her own brother and rid the world of evil.

Her act of giving away her child is the best example of a selfless sacrifice that a mother made which was the ultimate sacrifice.

Shagun doesn’t let go of Ruhi for any noble reasons but to pursue her own happiness. To the last minute on the day she’s walking away from Raman, he’s pleading with her and begging her to stay. He knows by then his wife has had an affair with his boss and he’s willing to forgive her and move past the same, endure the humiliation, jibes, taunts and whatever else comes his way so that his children don’t suffer. Ruhi doesn’t lose a mom, Adi doesn’t lose a dad, but she doesn’t care one bit and leaves him and her daughter behind without so much as a second look at them.

We see Ishita finding Raman at his absolute worst - he’s rude, mean, loud, aggressive, arrogant, brash, argumentative as it is. Now, in a usual daily soap this was already not the template for your average hero especially if the show were to last, but it was the case here. The show also premiered at 11 PM, so we knew that all bets were off, they could make Raman be as violent as well as abusive, and still find a way to make Ishita fall in love with him as given ITV it was possible too as anything goes. There have been shows where girls have been married to the main hero against their will and then fallen in love with him eventually - Kutumb, Pratigya, Madhubala to name a few.

We didn’t know how far they intended to take him as a character, and it wasn’t easy to like him given his tone in a lot of ways. It’s slowly that we see underneath, there’s a man who was as sweet as a lamb and who absolutely worshipped the ground that his wife walked on who suffered a betrayal that changed him.

Shagun has Raman at his absolute best and still leaves him for money but Ishita married him at his absolute worst for the child who happened to be his as she had hopelessly fallen in love with Ruhi by then.

So collectively we never cared about Shagun but we did worry how Ishita would cope post marriage with Raman given his own attitude and temperament; then there was his family which was so different than hers.

I don’t feel bad for Shagun as a mother. She is cruel and evil to separate children from their father. What I have been saying is that Ishita didn’t know about Shagun’s reality other than that she was busy and didn’t have much time for her child yet Ishita still went against her. I understand we are viewers know Shagun was completely bad, but she didn’t at the time. So I guess you all didn’t care that she did as you all knew Shagun was anyway a bad mother. But for me, I am surprised they showed her that way given she’s a fl and supposed to care about a mother. I thought she would find about Shagun’s reality and that’s why she will finally go against her, but that didn’t happen.

I saw the latest episode where Shagun tells her exactly that that how she betrayed her, pretended to be on her side and all but married Raman. Ishita didn’t have any answer to give back. As for Raman, I like his character the most other than Ruhi’s. Idc how he is atm. I can feel for him the most minus the part when he is disrespectful towards Ishita’s parents.

I think they intentionally avoided the trap of making Ishita as their FL find out that Shagun was a bad mom to begin with to make it the reason why she decides to marry Raman.

They just made her a person who doesn’t necessarily have to care about the feelings of someone who is for all intents and purposes a stranger to her when it really matters, even if she’s a woman or a mother.

YHM was an adaptation of a book called Custody by Manju Kapur iirc. I don’t remember it exactly but someone involved with Balaji or associated with Ekta found the book one day and recommended it to her as an interesting concept to adapt. Ekta read it and asked people involved with her team to read it and they found merit in the story and the recommendation to adapt it. They got in touch with the author/publishers and got the rights to adapt it.

In the book iirc, the story is along the same beats though it’s different. The character names of the main 4 characters and the 2 kids are the same but they added their own flavours to it for the show. Like Raman’s whole family was missing in the book let alone them being Punjabis. Ishita too was similarly a blank slate in terms of her family history let alone being written as a Tamil girl. I think they were shown as neighbours who meet courtesy of Ruhi and then ended up having a sexual relationship even before they got married. I don’t recall the entire story but I think the book ends with Shagun getting the custody of Aditya and Raman of Ruhi. He marries Ishita post his divorce while Shagun leaves the country for good with Adi and Ashok to settle abroad in Canada or USA. The siblings never reconnect and their parents make no efforts whatsoever to stay in touch with the other kid.

Ishita never gets to meet with Adi and doesn’t care about him in the book. Her only focus is Ruhi.

In the show, Ishita obviously cares about Ruhi but when Adi is introduced finally, she isn’t indifferent to him though they take their own time to bond too.

In the book, Ishita and Shagun rarely interact, in the show that’s not the case. So I think the choice to make Ishita decide not to think much about Shagun partly stems from there, the fact that she was portrayed as a bad mom to the audience as well, they couldn’t ride on two boats - make the audience think she’s a bad mom who doesn’t deserve to have Ruhi while simultaneously also making their main protagonist care for her feelings or be guilty about her decision to marry Raman without thinking about Shagun. It would give mixed signals to the audience and they clearly didn’t want that.

Had they made these choices then perhaps the show would have been appreciated for having characters with depth and complexity but also failed spectacularly as the audience isn’t used to dealing with such writing in a daily show. They clearly were making the show for TV audiences not OTT where they could perhaps have been able to go down this route at least back then, unlike now where even OTT platforms are instructing show makers to dumb down their content to make sure the audience hooked on their phones with the attention span of a reel can keep up with their dumb content.
