TV shows and movies simply have Pandits predict things and mention Rahu, Ketu, Mangal and Shani is obviously the hot favourite (ironic considering Shani’s associated with cold things) for every misfortune and bad things to happen.
But they hardly show a character who knows how to question these Pandits, who knows there’s more than one school of Jyotish even amongst the classics, who knows that an error in the date/place/time of birth by even a small margin can drastically change the chart of an individual completely. It can change your moon sign, which is the foundation of Vedic Jyotish as we determine the zodiac sign of an individual based on their moon sign not the sun sign as is the case with western astrology. That zodiac sign can then be further divided into 9 parts. Two people born on the same day at nearly the same time are bound to have the same planetary positions in their charts at a first glance. But depending on the location their ascendant changes which can completely alter the impact of those same planets in seemingly the same signs and at same degrees in terms of longitude and latitude. Which is why we have such drastic differences in people born in the same zodiac sign too. That sign is already segregated into 9 parts. Those 9 parts are further completely different for each individual based on multiple factors which can lead to different sets of permutations and combinations within the same framework and using the same foundational principles.
A few seconds of difference can completely change the subtle divisional charts that go into the finer details of the predictions that can be made about that individual. Forget about complete strangers, this is why when multiple babies aka twins, triplets or even more are born to the same set of parents at nearly the same time, day and location too their subtle charts - paramount of which is the Navamsa or the D9 for even the most basic of readings forget about higher charts - can and do completely change. Which is why literal siblings born together can have drastically different life trajectories and even life expectancies not to mention life experiences.
Can you name of a single example of a movie or a show where they delved into these nuances? I highly doubt it.
Because it’s fine to make fun of ancient Indian traditions and cultural practices but when the same mediums use Tarot cards, crystal balls, use fancy terms like sidereal and tropical charts they make them seem cool, mysterious and interesting as well as accurate sometimes. But when Indians do it using their own standards dating back 1000s of years we are superstitious or frauds.
They also never show a person consulting more than that one pandit who always is shown as the best in the field. But never have a person go for a second consultation with a different person, same as we would with a doctor or a lawyer or anyone we usually approach as a consultant of any kind.
Ironically, the very people who make fun of these kinds of practices, practitioners onscreen be it as actors, writers, directors etc. themselves are the most into these sorts of practices and would secretly carry Yantras, wear gemstones or Rudraksha or get Poojas done or have Pandits chant some mantras for them for some remedy depending upon their circumstances.
It’s not that there is no basis or foundation to the very existence of Jyotish, it is that it was seen as cool to mock it but it was seen as being willing to try new experiences when you approached a shaman, a gypsy types.
I don’t say that there aren’t frauds or that there aren’t people who practice with half baked knowledge but I think not everyone out there is a fool to believe in these things and certainly not every practitioner is a fraud.
