This is exactly why Smriti will be a better actor. She doesn't fake it or exaggerate her actions. She appears so natural it all seems real.

I love Tulsi. Smriti still got it.

That’s because she’s not a caricature of what a Gujarati woman sounds like. Anupama is, much like the characters from TMKOC, they hammer in on the stereotypes created by Bollywood about how people from different communities behave, sound like, eat etc.

People have finally been tired of TMKOC and initially they were able to get away with it because it is a comedy show and they included every single stereotype possible, including those aimed at people struggling with obesity by literally having characters whose surname is Haathi… and of course they are obese.

With Anupama the whole thing is so grating because they don’t even make her ex-MIL, who has to be older than her and probably even less educated or maybe not even literate speak like she does. The tone, accent, pitch, the nasally twang are all high pitched and exaggerated intentionally and repeatedly.

Now, there’s no reason for anyone to feel embarrassed about not knowing or being fluent in a different language, particularly English, which was literally imposed upon our country by the British who colonised our country. But the fact is, there is a proper way to speak and people don’t even have to be necessarily scolded, humiliated or corrected repeatedly when they speak something that doesn’t sound correct; if you hear the correct pronunciation of something enough times our brains subconsciously start picking up on it and tries to speak correctly which regular practice or frequent conversations help improve with time until fluency is naturally acquired.

But this show would rather have her double down on the accent than have her ease up on it because god forbid if she doesn’t accomplish her life’s mission - making homemakers feel like they’re worthless and incompetent in every regard - including speaking correctly.

it is weird that they never show anupamaa trying to learn to speak English correctly.

I have seen irl that not all homemakers are like this while speaking English. They cannot speak sentences but the pronunciation is correct. Some are fluent in English.

Also anupamaa reinforces the state stereotypes. It was evident in last few epi when a Punjabi character was shown loud and loving parathas

They even had Maharashtrians who are wife-beating good for nothing drunkards and women who work as maids. Don’t forget that.

So far I think they have not mocked Bengalis and that’s probably because RG herself is one and wouldn’t like it but all the other communities are fair and open game to her.

Sorry got caught up in real world problems, hence the late reply.

@b: This is exactly it. It isn’t difficult to pick up an accent or correct pronunciation if you keep hearing the word often enough. It’s not a character flaw or something to be ashamed of if someone can’t or doesn’t know how to speak fluent English — nor is it a certificate of knowledge or intelligence.

When English speakers try to learn our languages, you don’t see them berating themselves for not matching our accent or pronunciation, or bending over backwards trying to. So why should we feel bad about ours? If you’re capable of reading, writing, or speaking even one language — especially your mother tongue — that should be good enough.

The way she exaggerates the whole thing is exactly what grates on my nerves. I’ve seen people with minimal formal education speak far more fluent English than this exaggerated performance. The forced twang frankly doesn’t inspire empathy, and when someone tries too hard to cultivate pity, it usually has the opposite effect — which is exactly what’s happening here.

The sad part is that no one has asked her to stop this nonsense and just speak normally. I’ve seen actors speak in particular dialects without being annoying because they were convincing enough to carry it — for example, Ishqbaaaz (Gauri), Imlie, Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya, and so many others. Those leads had distinct accents, but they were authentic. Here, she’s clearly exaggerating, which really irritates anyone who isn’t already sympathetic to her so-called “plight” — and honestly, it feels like an audition for a parody.

@red: And the irony writes itself — a show claiming to “empower women” ends up mocking homemakers for not speaking flawless English. If empowerment means making women feel small for not sounding a certain way, then it’s not empowerment at all. Yeh kaisi ajeeb “women empowerment” hai, bhai — ekdum lost in translation.

I’ve haven't watched TMKOC, but honestly it’s disgusting how these shows reduce entire communities to caricatures for cheap laughs and even resort to fat-shaming. Someone should really educate them about medical conditions like thyroid or hormonal issues that causes weight gain. I have had this complaint with Ekta as well — she loves stereotyping South Indians. I thought she’d outgrown that phase after YHM, but nope — she still did it with Shivangi in BALH 4. I mean come on, it is 2025. RS thinks this is somehow a fair depiction of how Gujaratis are when it all it does it showcase them in a poor light.

No need for apologies. Real life always takes precedence over such things.

@purple - exactly. It isn’t that she’s not fluent in English as a character that’s grating, it’s that there’s an exaggeration of her accent being too thick, her pronunciation being flawed despite being shown that her dream was to visit US someday. The least she could have accomplished is say the name of her dream destination right. I would be absolutely fine if she were absolutely baffled at how to pronounce names of places within the US like Mississippi or Cincinnati or Massachusetts as a non-native speaker and as these names are not as often used in conversations or even heard in movies or shows unless you specifically tune into English and particularly American movies and shows.

@red - this show being about women empowerment is the biggest con they’ve pulled off because regardless of the situation, the main lead ends up playing the victim card. Getting divorced from her first husband is shown as her victory, and perhaps it’s her only victory… but I genuinely don’t understand how that is. Also, I know this might not exactly come across as an opinion that people would like, but we have a very popular saying in Hindi for a reason - taali dono haathon se bajti hai. Fine her husband was the scum of the earth, he didn’t treat her right and therefore deserves all the hate and scorn sent his way, but what about her inability to cut off the cord with his family that led to her second husband feeling unvalued and ignored? Is that also not in a way her failure as a wife, even as she preaches to others about how to behave in a marriage?

I understand if she cannot cut ties with her kids but that doesn’t mean she’s incapable of cutting ties with her in-laws. I don’t expect her to be suddenly mean to them or ignore them if there was say a medical emergency that required her to help save a life, but shouldn’t she have been held accountable for the failure of that marriage? Didn’t she play victim card to justify the end of it too and prove herself as innocent as possible? Is there no concept of accountability? Fine, you had a husband whom you divorced because he was abusive, demeaning, disrespectful and even cheated on you. I totally understand your need to end that marriage. But what about the man who did everything right but still got the short end of the stick? Isn’t there something wrong from your end that needs to be analysed too? Probably fixed if possible, at least accepted?

Women empowerment is not about playing victim card regardless of the situation if the outcome is not in your favour.

@green - I never liked TMKOC and never watched it, but obviously the memes help us know things. The show is a crude amalgamation of almost all communities in the mainstream of India and a distasteful representation of the same. It’s full of tropes and traits made synonymous with everyone represented by Bollywood.

As for BALH 2.0 didn’t watch it either. But am not surprised Ekta didn’t learn anything either

Ekta had the opportunity to break the mold, yet she chose to repeat the same stereotypical representation once again. At least if it had been remotely true, it wouldn’t have been so exasperating/ tiresome to watch.

@b: This is the issue I have with her too. One husband never treated her right, ill-treated and insulted her, and she just repeated the same callousness with the person who literally and figuratively worshipped the ground she walked on. She never gave him the importance he deserved in her life. In the end, all the viewers felt she rightly deserved the Shahs, even though that sounds harsh (and no one deserves to go through that).
