It is the beginning of the Samvaat, the Hindu calendar. Like we follow January 1 by Western calendar, Hindu calendar starts every year after Diwali or 3rd day of Diwali! So new year n months like kartik, shravan or whatever are according to the Hindu calendar which starts from today each year. It is approximately 56.7 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar and is Nepal's official calendar.

The next Hindu New year … that is Vikram Samvat will be Vikram Samvat 2083, which will begin in the spring of 2026, starting with the Hindu New Year (Gudi Padwa/Yugadi/ Baisakh)around March or April. Vikram Samvat 2082, which began on March 30, 2025, concludes around April 2026.

Suta, I don't know the first month name but definitely not Baisakhi, that is wrong. Baisakhi is a festival celebrated in North India to celebrate the beginning of the harvest festival, like Bihu in Assam, Ugadi in South. Kartik month comes in October. Chaitra comes before. Hindu calendar follows the lunar cycle, Gregorian follows solar cycle.
