Celebrated in the Hindu month of Shravan, Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi Poornima is the day a brother promises to protect his sister and the sister prays for his wellbeing. It's a celebration of the beautiful bond siblings share of love and companionship.
Traditionally, a sister ties a threaded amulet, called Rakhi, on her brother's wrist, and the brother, in return, gives her a gift. However, in today's day and age, this has become more a sign of protection and such threads are being tied on sisters, fathers, mothers, and cousins, moving away from the gender roles of men being the protectors.
Raksha Bandhan is often considered to have begun in the Mahabharata. One day, Lord Krishna injured his palm. Draupadi, seeing the wound, tore off a piece of her saree and tied it on his hand to stop the bleeding. That day, Lord Krishna, who considered Draupadi his sister, made a promise that he will protect her always and this was a promise he kept. When Draupadi was being disrobed and dishonoured in public by Dushashan, Lord Krishna saved her honour by making an endless sari that protected Draupadi.
