| | | SIZZLING SIREN: Deepal Shaw | Kalyug, directed by Mohit Suri, "is a fiction of fact," says producer Mahesh Bhatt, of Vishesh Films.
Raw, stark, shocking and deeply disturbing, the film explores the murky underbelly of international crime — po*nography — and it's international nexus. The characters have been taken from real life, interwoven with fiction.
Says Mohit, "Everything has been meticulously researched from journalistic data — from the PBS documentary American po*n, India Today's article on desi po*n and Times of India's articles on honeymoon couples.
po*nography is a $56 billion industry today, with big companies and hotels profiting from it." What fuels sex trade?
Kalyug was initially titled Blue Film. Says Mohit, "No newcomer wanted to play a role in it, as it hinted at being a sleazy film, which it is not."
| | | ZAMANA BADAL GAYA: Deepal Shaw and Kunal Khemu in Kalyug | Says Mahesh, "I got the idea of making Kalyug after reading the India Today article on a honeymooning couple, whose lovemaking scenes were recorded in a hotel and distributed throughout the world. People all over the world want to see reality sex, not fictional sex.
Human trafficking has become big business everywhere; it's the third largest international crime after drugs and the arms trade. Desi Indian women and po*n sites are a huge craze abroad.
That's why victims of natural disasters like famines and earthquakes are sold for these po*nographic rackets. They are drugged, brutalised and blackmailed into joining the flesh trade."
Shocking climax | | | BAD BOY: Emraan Hashmi as Ali in Kalyug | In Kalyug, Deepal Shaw (who plays po*n star Annie), is shown as an earthquake victim, who is sold into the business. "Insurgents, too, are making money out of the po*nography racket. In the Northeast, they make women stand at gunpoint and make them shoot for po*nographic tapes, which are then sold cheap in countries like Bangladesh," adds Bhatt.
"The climax of Kalyug will stun audiences, because it questions our morality to an extent not seen before." po*n star approached
Says Mohit, "The characters in Kalyug have been based on reality. "While Kunal Khemu (Kuna Darr) and Smiley (Renuka) play a honeymooning couple, Amrita Singh plays Simi Roy, a powerful woman who runs an international po*n racket.
When we went to Switzerland, we came across a woman like this, but though we tried to meet her, we couldn't. Emraan Hashmi plays the owner of a sex shop in Zurich.
For Deepal's role, we had originally approached Sunny Leone, a top Indian po*n star, but she wasn't available. She has an official website in her name, lives in the USA and is extremely beautiful. We couldn't afford her; her fee is $1 million." Reality bytes
Mohit came away from the film, deeply disturbed. "We shot in bizarre places like fetish shops and sex streets in Zurich.
A fetish shop is somewhere you can just indulge in your fetishes — like having ice cream and sex, together. One is not supposed to shoot there, so one day, when we started shooting, p***s and gangsters came running in and threatened to break our cameras. It was scary!" Bhatt scared
But what scared Bhatt was "the Love Parade, in Zurich, in August. What was started by 15 people, more than a decade ago, now has 5,00,000 lakh people. It's the most scary, bizarre scene that one has ever seen, with people puking and fainting. It's a rave orgy.
Lakhs of people, some naked couples, some with babies under the influence of drugs, and swaying to trance music, throng the streets just to express their freedom.
What scared me was their collective hysteria. The police said it wasn't safe for us to roam the streets even the next day, as people with the drug acid in their bloodstream, are likely to do something violent. But we managed to shoot there." |
