That article was basically a bullet point of misogynistic reasons why two consenting adults shouldn’t do what they want to do. And it looses all credibility by brining up internet comments. Seriously?

Two years is not an age difference.

Abhishek wasn’t exactly some virgin when he got married so who cares if Aishwarya had boyfriends 🙄 He himself obviously didn’t.

I didn't write the article, New York Times did and they certainly didn't consult me before writing it. Ash's reputation was such that even NYT didn't shy from publishing everything that was being said about her at that time. Her past shenanigans were a hot topic of discussion in the newspapers, TV shows, and Internet forums.

Back in 90s and 2000s, a girl dating more than one guy was considered a taboo and having live-in relationships before marriage was an even bigger taboo.

But Ash didn't just date two guys....she had multiple live-in relationships before becoming Bachchan Bahu. Her live-in relationships with Akshaye Khanna, Salman, and Vivek were publicly known. She dated Rajeev Mulchandani and Sameer Acharya. Then there was news of Taal Se with Ghai.

Abhishek was briefly engaged to Karisma. He didn't have a long dating history and live-in relationships like Mother Teresa Ash. He was probably a virgin.

Why would her parents get offended at the marriage? They were desperate for her to enter Bachchan family as it elevated her status in Bollywood. She was extremely controversial and getting married into a high-profile family like Bachchans did help her reputation.

You didn't write the article but you keep peddling the same misogyny like you have been for a long while ,on here. You use words like 'reputation' and 'shenanigans ' to refer to her past relationships while you conveniently ignore Amitabh's adultery and inappropriate behaviour as you refer to the Bachchans as 'high profile'. That's exactly what a misogynist would do. You sl(_)t shame her and make it sound like she had been sleeping with a bunch of guys at the same time when you say she had had 'multiple live in relationships ', as if she slept with one guy and drove to the next guy's flat right afterwards but the same standards don't apply to the guys involved for some reason. Why were their ' reputations' not tainted if premarital relationships were such a controversial thing back then ?Which they weren't ,in the industry even back then. If Aishwarya's relationship with Salman was controversial it was because of HIM. That she had to go to the police . Otherwise there really wasn't any controversy. Yeah maybe she did sleep with Subhash Ghai to get Taal ,or maybe she found him irresistible ,who knows but then how do you know Abhishek didn't sleep with JP Dutta to get Refugee ? How do you know he hasn't gone down on Adi Chopra or Mani Ratnam ? . If Amitabh's obsession with clout and attention is anything to go buy I'm sure he told Abhishek to do whatever it takes to get roles.

Abhishek was good looking ,he was away from home for years when he was in the U S or wherever . There is no reason to think he was a virgin 🙄. I would have totally slept with him had I been old enough back then and had I had the opportunity. By that I mean plenty of girls must have thrown themselves at him but sure let's pretend he stayed ' pure' while Aishwarya was on a sex swing all day.

I know you didn’t write the article. My opinion was entirely about the article. NY Times didn’t write that article because Ash had any sort of reputation. They wrote is just to sensationalize an Indian celebrity wedding.

Having multiple boyfriends or being in a live in relationships was only a taboo for ordinary people. It was not some big scandal for everyone within the industry. Ash never even dated Akshay Khanna let alone live with him. Akshay had just verbalized his crush on her on more than one occasion. And no, she didn’t live with Vivek either. The only person she was strongly rumored to have lived with was at some point was Salman. Abhishek was dating to Karishma for five years. Then he dated some model he dumped for Ash. There were even rumors of him dating Nandita Mehtani somewhere in between. Just because he was never in a live in relationship doesn’t mean he never had his fair share of relationships or flings.

Neither of them were virgins. Neither of them were promiscuous. They were two grown adults who met, fell in love, and didn’t judge each other based on their past. Misogyny is why some people, and the media, made an issue out of her being 2 years older than him. And misogyny is why her past relationships were always brought up whereas no one ever said anything about his broken engagement.

Not sure why Amitabh is being dragged in the discussion because the NYT article talked about Aishwarya and Abhishek engagement, not Aishwarya and Amitabh.

Reputation and shenanigans are not misogynist words.

Saint Ash s!ut-shamed Manisha Koirala publicly by saying "Manisha was seeing a new guy every second month".

How did she get away with it?

Without any doubt, Aish is a controversial person...she gives scope for hailing her and for bashing her...

You brought up the NYT article to justify your insane claims about her. Otherwise nobody cared about that article. And you brought Abhishek's family into it when you said they were too good for Aishwarya. And I was telling you why that's nonsense.

You still evade whatever I said about the men involved. Reputation and shenanigans aren't misogynistic words. Neither is the word prostitute . But I'm sure you wouldn't want me to refer to you by that word. Don't act dumb. Referring to a woman's past relationships as shenanigans and reputation while giving making lame excuses for the men in her life and not holding them to the same standards is misogyny.

What she said about Manisha is from a gossip rag ,from the 90s when it was common for these magazines to have these kind of quotes and headlines. Manisha had said similar things as well, it was a back and forth. How do I know this? I read that edition, as a child when it came out. This is just a poor attempt at nitpicking . Yes she's not a 'saint'. She has constantly acted like she's better than other women. The whole I'm not like other girls thing. But that has nothing to do with her past .If a woman is not a saint she's 'controversial ' . What world do you live in that you come up with all this nonsense ? Even the b1tchy women in my neighborhood are better than this.

Even if all the things you say about her are true ,which they aren't , the Bachchan's have plenty of be embarassed about. Abhishek is the son of a pervert.

Abhishek has been getting a lot of hate because of Abhi-Ash divorce rumors and successful defamation campaign against Bachchans by Bahurani's PR. Abhishek is being belitted that he doesn't deserve Aishwarya Rai, that Aishwarya is too good for him, and that he is insecure of Ash. Bachchans are getting hate because according to Ash fans they're lucky to have Aishwarya in their family and that legendary megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who is the biggest superstar India has even seen, is relevant today because Ash is his daughter-in-law.

However, this was not the case when Aishwarya married Abhishek in 2007. The entire industry and the country was shocked when Amitabh decided to get Abhishek engaged to Aishwarya.

This article was published in The New York Times on January 18, 2007, at the occasion of Abhi-Ash engagement. The article talks about all the controversies surrounding their marriage because of Ash being older than Abhishek, that she brings bad luck to her boyfriends, and her controversial reputation due to her highly publicized relationships with Salman and Vivek.

This is a snippet from the article:

Everybody - be it fans, media or family members - were against their marriage because of Aishwarya's flings in the past and the myth that she brings bad omen for her boyfriends. They warned Abhishek 'if you marry her your career will be ruined' and insisted that she is very unlucky.

They tried to dissuade him by talking about their age difference (Abhishek is about to turn 31 and Aishwarya is 33) and that she is a manglik (born under a particular astrological configuration that the superstitious believe is not auspicious for the husband). But Abhishek didn't listen to anybody and withstood all the opposition.

Rai's age has been the focus of some discussion — the implication being that at 33 she is practically a spinster and has had extraordinary good luck in managing to persuade Bachchan, two years her junior, to pluck her from the shelf.

The fact that Rai has previously been attached to other men has also not gone unnoticed, and the details of earlier relationships with two other Bollywood actors, Salman Khan and Vivek Oberoi, have been picked over at length. (Bachchan's earlier engagement to another actress, Karisma Kapoor, has attracted less comment.)

NYT also published the comments from blogs during that time.

The tone of the thousands of participants on blog threads on the subject is less inhibited. "I doubt if she will be a good homemaker," is a common response. "Ash is too ambitious and will not be ready to compromise her career for a family. The Bachchan family needs a housewife," another fan declared. "Poor Abhishek, after knowing all about her relationships in the past. Apart from that she is elder than him by two years. Certainly he is unlucky," concluded another.
