Jaya Bachchan slams threats against stand-up comic Kunal Kamra, condemns vandalism
Kunal Kamra has received support from political figures such as Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan and Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs after Shiv Sena workers vandalised the Happy Comedy Club at The Unicontinental Mumbai Hotel, the building in which the club resides, following the stand-up comic’s gig where he threw shade at the Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. Bachchan came forward to voice her support for the comedian, who’s facing the heat after his much-talked-about gig.
Jaya Bachchan addressed reporters right outside the Parliament and questioned the unprecedented limitations on the stand-up comic’s freedom of speech.

Jaya Bachchan’s response to the Kunal Kamra controversy was straightforward and sharp. The veteran actor and Member of the Parliament in the Rajya Sabha was addressing reporters outside the Parliament when she shared her thoughts on the controversy: “If there is a restriction on speaking, what will become of you? You are anyway in a bad situation. There are restrictions on you. You would be told to speak just on this and nothing else, that do not interview Jaya Bachchan.”
Jaya added, “Where is freedom of speech? There is freedom of action only when there is a ruckus – beat up the opposition, rape women, murder them. What else? You [Eknath Shinde] left your real party and formed another party for power. Isn’t that an insult of Balasaheb?”
