Prime time on a Sunday brings with it high expectations. It's why five-time champions CSK will take on fellow five-time champions in MI on the first weekend of a brand new season. The big deal is MS Dhoni returning to play, he does IPL to IPL now and he wants to bat as freely as he did when he was a child. Sounds great, no? But it's not all, he'll tag along with Ashwin for the first time in an IPL since 2016, so ingenuity and maybe even genius wouldn't be a surprise. MI won't be at full strength, Hardik Pandya misses out due to an over-rate offence (the punishment won't be as severe going forward), so Suryakumar Yadav will captain the side.

MI had a rough IPL 2024. Hardik's initiation to captaincy was rough to say the least. The early losses hit them hard. Hardik's absence for game one is an issue, the bigger one is Jasprit Bumrah's absence, at least till the end of March. They have strike bowlers though. Trent Boult returns, he's great in the powerplay, and has Deepak Chahar for company. Mujeeb Ur Rahman might get the nod ahead of Corbin Bosh in Chennai. Mitch Santner is good in the middle. Their death bowling doesn't seem as strong, let's see how they work around that.
