Mahashivratri, the holy night of Shiva is one of the most significant festivals of Hinduism dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. It is celebrated as the night of fasting, devotion, meditation and spiritual awakening.

There are various stories associated with this special night. According to some literatures, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's marriage took place on this auspicious night symbolizing the union of Purush and Prakriti. Other literatures say Lord Shiva had performed tandav nritya, the dance of creation and destruction.

Devotees fast throughout the day (sometimes without water too), perform RudraAbhishek which is offering milk, ghee, honey, curd, sugar to the Shivalinga while chanting Om Namaha Shivay. They also do jagran which is staying awake at night and doing bhajans dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Here is a beautiful song on Lord Shiva, who is the subject of this song. In the narrative, a blind man is asked by a mute lady why he is unable to ask Shiva to give him his sight back. The blind man uses this song to explain to the woman the simplicity of Shiva, who gave up everything. Therefore, asking Him for anything is pointless. It's a Nindha Stuti song, which means a "ninda stuti" is a prayer that doubles as a grievance!! To emphasise the transient nature of all existence, praise is lavished while accusations are made!
