Wanted to make this post a while back but was a bit lazy. So here goes: I totally appreciate that we get to see a dysfunctional family in all its glory! Sometimes, ITV does a super sweet unrealistic portrait of a family which does not make good for TV because it is boring.
So I totally appreciate that the CVs are keeping it real and giving good characterization and depth to these relationships. It gives us lots to analyze and discuss if the CVs choose to give us arcs that also focuses on these characters.
The problems here are complex that it won't get resolved in one episode where someone just says, "okay we are all good" like weirdo idiots. Instead, these are problems with deep roots. In the real world, it may never get resolved and so it will be interesting to see if the CVs put these dynamics to good use to push the story forward.
1. Dislike -- noun as in antagonism, hatred toward something
We have a couple who really despise each other. At one point, there was loads of attraction and perhaps even affection and love. Now they repel each other and neither have any respect. He sees her as a gold digger who is only obsessed with money and control. She despises him because she sees him as a failure -- more importantly, he has failed her. He failed to be a success and his continuous business losses have caused the marriage to break down. It frustrates her that rather than enjoying a good life that she dreamed, she has to go out there and hustle to maintain their lifestyle. She is the one who had to pull this family out of their financial mess.
In the real world, financial troubles do cause tremendous stress on a marriage and can lead to divorce. There is blame game, frustration and anxiety. Given that their marriage has deteriorated to a level where they barely tolerate each other, can it really recover?
What do folks think?
