2024 has given us emotions, challenges, opportunities, disappointments and, why not, some inevitable viral memes. And here we are today, 31st December, on the threshold of a new year. 2024 is about to end, leaving room for a new chapter named 2025.
Manifestations, meetings, but also conflicts, tensions and environmental disasters. At a global level, 2024 was a year marked by often disruptive events that put peace and the stability of global structures to the test.
2024 has seen everything: from science which has made giant strides towards new discoveries to politics which, as always, has not failed to offer us some scenes worthy of a soap opera. Conflicts bloodied the world, if we turn our gaze, from right to left, we see wars that destroy nations and cities, causing thousands of deaths. Cities around the world lit up with great events like Olympics in Paris and, in the meantime, nature continued to remind us who's in charge, with storms, floods, heat waves and record snowfalls. Our behaviours still seem far from being up to global challenges. However, the growing voice of young people and their commitment are signs of hope for a more balanced and concrete future. And then, how can we forget the inevitable invasion of artificial intelligence? This year truly marked the era in which artificial intelligence moved from the background of technological experiments to the forefront of everyday life. While for many this has sparked excitement about new possibilities, many have panicked about a future where we can no longer trust our eyes and ears.
Now, as we are about to toast to the new year, the list of 2025 resolutions gets longer. Eat healthy, go to the gym, read more, save money... resolutions that, let's face it, often don't make it past …erm say January 15th. As we prepare to uncork the sparkling wine and survive the phone calls and messages of greetings, let's take a moment to toast: to the past that has made us stronger, to the future that intrigues us and to the present that we too often underestimate.
