One of the most selfless things a person can do before they pass away is to donate their organs or entire body. A single organ donor has the potential to save eight lives, giving hope to those afflicted with terminal illnesses. It is one of the ways one can ‘live after death’ and remembered through the recipient’s smiles and blessings. Body donation is an equally noble act involving the donation of one’s body to a medical institution after death for purposes such as medical research, surgical training, and beyond.
Actor Aditya Pancholi recently announced his intention to donate his body for medical research after his death. Numerous Bollywood celebrities have repeatedly highlighted the importance of organ and body donation, here’s looking at five such celebs.
“As actors, we often play heroes on screen, but true heroism lies in giving back to society in meaningful ways. By donating my body, I hope to inspire others to consider this act of generosity, which can make a real difference. Even in death, I want to continue contributing to the world,” a recent ABP Live report mentioned, quoting Pancholi.
Pancholi will be making a grand announcement on the same at the Lion Gold Awards ceremony. Praising his decision, Lion Raju Manwani, Chief Promoter of Lion Gold Awards, avered, “This reflects his extraordinary personality and his strong commitment to humanity. Such selfless acts encourage others to think about how they too can make a difference. I truly admire him for this heroic gesture.”
In 2008, Priyanka Chopra committed to donating all her organs after her death during a conference held by the Indian National Association for Study of Liver (INSAL). During another occasion, she remarked, “You read about transplant, see it in movies, and watch it on TV, but only until you go through it the value of it hits you. If you learn from someone’s experience, it is valuable what organ donation is rather than waiting for it to hit you. I hope that when I die I can make a difference by donating my body.”
Those who grew up in the 90s will recall the iconic commercial featuring the newly crowned Miss World Aishwarya Rai discussing the importance of organ donation. The actress committed to donating her blue eyes to the Eye Bank Association of India more than a decade ago.
Juhi Chawla has committed to donating her eyes upon her passing. She has consistently dedicated herself to the mission of organ donation, encouraging others to follow suit.
Tanu Weds Manu actor R Madhavan is also a proud organ donor. He on numerous occasions has debunked myths surrounding organ donation. He at times has expressed his admiration for France, where everyone is considered to be an organ donor at death unless they opt out.
