'I know limits of stardom'
Piyush Roy
November 15, 2005
With the second innings of Indian Idol round the corner, reigning idol Abhijeet Sawant is on the move, literally, criss-crossing the country and abroad with shows, perhaps making hay as long as the star-shine lasts. We catch up with Abhijeet on the eve of his first US tour on his plans, career, new home and love life…
It's hardly been six months since the last Indian Idol and Indian Idol 2 is all set to begin. Do you think it has come too soon?
The concept still maintains its exclusivity, and I am looking forward to the second edition. We were aware of the show's subsequent editions when we first signed up. That it came so soon doesn't matter. I know the limits of stardom. Also, you can't live your entire life reaping the benefits of just one hit.
Are you going to be involved in any way in the selection process of Indian Idol 2?
I don't think I can become a judge, but I guess the makers of the show have something in mind for me as they have booked my dates in bulk for Indian Idol 2. As of now, my role in the new show is still under wraps.
You have a choc-a-bloc itinerary. Are you making the most as long as the title lasts?
It's not a bad idea to do so many shows — even the big stars do them. I earn about Rs 3 lakh per show and do about 20 shows in a month. I have performed in the UK and am going to the US in mid-November, with a show in Maldives lined up in between.
Your playback plans?
I want to go into serious playback singing and have already sung for films like Aashiq Banaya Aapne, Mr Ya Miss and Jawani Diwani.
When is your next album coming out?
My first solo album Aap Ka Abhijeet Sawant is among the top five in the country. We have sold more than nine lakh copies, so I am not in a hurry to launch another album. But it should come by February-March.
When are you moving into your Bandra home?
I am not, the rumours are false. I have bought a place in Vile Parle, it's really nice and I intend to shift early next year.
What about getting engaged to your childhood sweetheart?
My so-called engagement is just another rumour. The girl in question is just a good friend. I am trying to see someone, but it's too early to comment on that.
ummm...i guess that means someone's on his mind...??? ðŸ˜
