I wholeheartedly agree. Based on Preity's role in Dil Se, I feel she could have pulled off the Mansi role in Taal. Rani never had that "it" factor. She was not a glamour girl and lacked sex appeal.

Rani looks good in films like Chalte Chalte and KANK with the smoky eyes makeup. That really changed her overall look. She can pull off contemporary fashions but the second you take off that makeup and put her in traditional Indian wear, she looks like a village girl. Like any average Indian woman. There are people who posted here on IF about seeing her in real life and how plain she is when you see her. How she's so short in size in real life and one would never think she's a star.

Most BW actresses can still look good without makeup, but Rani is not one of them. Preity had a no-makeup look in Dil Se as Mani Ratnam forced her to take it all off and she looks charming.

In contrast, this is Rani without makeup in Hey Ram. She even admits that she tried to cheat the director and keep some makeup on but was told to take it all off.

Now let's compare to Aishwarya in Raincoat, where she has a no makeup look. I feel the pictures say it all.

I feel Preity cannot do Taal like Aishwarya. Because Preity cannot dance as beautifully as Aishwarya.
