When I asked the question what is the sanctity of a relationship thrust upon by society… I meant Ani and Jhanak’s temple wedding.

I like to play the devil’s advocate on this issue because I find this concept of “forced wedding” an oxymoron of sorts; I mean ITV has almost aced this bond to Ultrapromax level…and in a country where there are more people usually marrying by bonds arranged by their families, I assume writers have been able to use such tropes because there is a general consensus that marriage alone confers sanction on such relationships. Once someone is married, kuch bhi ho… bas wahi bond maani jayegi… well it’s another thing that most makers use this trope to make sure the two people in such a bond girte padte fall in love..Even where the hero (not sure if they have tried with heroine) is in a committed relationship with someone else, he will finally only recognise the shaadi over anything else…

Now coming to Jhanakland, That temple wedding was to all intents and purposes a wedding that they both didn’t desire? It was a bond formed by the pressure from society.

They went to great lengths to hide that bond, not to submit to it. That they fell in love along the way is another matter. Yet even to each other, they used only euphemisms to describe it usually. Frankly, their secret wedding in any serial would have caused viewers to be sure they are the real deal and be certain that these two would walk into the sunset. Yet, the character trait of the ML and situational dynamics of FL ensured that this would be a moral dilemma that would stop the relationship from progressing…. To me in some ways, this is a first (?) of sorts where love ( in whatever shape or form) was being prioritised over a marriage ( in whatever shape or form). To add to that, they went in for annulment too… Then they went ahead with the wedding of the so called lovers which just stopped short of a few rituals before hell broke loose!! The FL took a stand of leaving the hell hole she had inhabited prioritising her mental health and well being over love. Today the Kolkata gang have given sanctity to that relationship which is considered to be of the supposed free will of the two lovers, where the free will of one is highly suspect, words notwithstanding..😜

All in all, an interesting situation from the perspective of a viewer who is purely looking at how the story is building…. I know if we get emotions, sensibilities etc involved it gets murky. is the writer trying to get the protagonists to face their worst fears not just voice them? Will their love be strong enough to shine through to prove that all the sanctity in a relationship is derived from from only the heart’s desire? I don’t know and frankly I don’t even know if I will like what they will show.

For my own sanity, I am just skimming through episodes now… but I have to say they have the story poised at a difficult point..It’s a risky move but you never know
