The Oscars is a lot about lobbying...and doing a certain circuit of 'small' festivals.

Allegedly Rajamouli spent a quite big amount of crores to get at least a song-Oscar...and RRR wasn't even sent as Indian contribution to the only foreign films Oscar as Rajamouli contested as a foreign contribution on his own.

SRK's Paheli was sent from India to the Oscars (certainly because they left Swades out the year before)... SRK was already known a bit in the US film circuit (not as much as he is now), so he would have to spend a lot of time there to lobby for the film.
