But had they shown some buildup with Dev-Armaan, and then introduced Abhira when they reached at a dead end, I feel it could have served better.

Yes Dadisa somehow controlled herself to not slap Abhira. Baaki maybe Dadisa is testing Armaan to see whom does he choose? Phupasa has time and again mentioned that Armaan biwi ke peeche ghumta rehta hai. He only cares about Abhira even though she stole the documents, stood against Dadisa whom he claims to love the most and when she elopes like a dutiful husband after that award winning speech to Phupasa goes to bring her back!

I really hope Madhav comes and give it back to Dadisa for putting his son through so much of stress and hurt. Everytime it is Armaan who bears the brunt. Madhav in the last episode claimed he will not let Armaan break this time. Hopefully he lives upto his words.
