kaushalya sumitra kaikeyi and other wives relation seems like harmonious two were named at the time of putrakameshthi yagya vavata and parivitti at least to a great extent, dasharath ancestor sagar father had around 13 wives but the chief queen was pregnant and other wives tried to poison but he was saved by vashishth and names sagar means with poison as he was born with a poison mark on his body

Relation was never highlighted but would have definitely been good, I however feel he cared only for these three(obviously Kaushalya was his first and chief wife and Keikayi had saved his life, not sure why Sumitra was important to him) because he didn't even think of giving the Prasad of Putrakameshthi to others

i heard sumitra was a sweet friend to her husband whenever he is tensed he goes to sumitra and she pacifies him with soothing words

regarding payas, shringi or vashishth told him to give to his eligible wives maybe only these three were eligible and belong to royal linage

just a guess

and one point kaikeyi though being the favourite receives least offering of prasad and sumitra was given twice i think he do gave her prominence

according to valmiki ramayan sita and her sisters urmila mandavi shrutakirti were married, hundred girls were sent with each of them as friends

similarly the other women seem to have just accompanied the three principle wives dasharath may have married in hope of child when the chief three didn't had any child

may be a guess

I don't think it had to do with only these three being eligible, why would king marry so many non eligible queens?

@bold this is the reason I think Keikayi wasn't his favorite, it's probably a later addition or else Dashrath was just more attracted since she was youngest

Definitely Kaushalya was his favorite and most important wife and

Sumitra you explained that could be the reason

Keikayi i think he only gave since he felt indebted to her (at the last)

Those women sent with brides are people like Manthara

Don't think Dashrath would have married them

Just my view

maybe you are right

by the way i heard parashuram didn't kill someone who had a sacred thread of marriage that thread remains till one year of marriage and dasharath married one each year to save himself from his wrath

dasharath lived for 60000 years and had 60000 wives as mentioned in kamb ramayan

though i find the fact quite unjustified

and yes i also think kaikeyi was youngest among three at least by age dasharath may have considered the age factor while distributing the payas

a guess

Not needed, yet am adding it

Firstly चान्यपूर्वा means who has never loved/been of someone else. "Second hand" is a very vague and harsh word making of it

Secondly when the Hanuman ji this "सुजातमस्येति हि साधुबुद्धेः ", he thinking it would have been very nice/lucky for Ravana (and not Ram), because that entire context he has been thinking Ravanas wife, and next verse is when he feels bad about even thinking that Seeta could have been "like wives of Ravana"

Thirdly Sarga 7 of Sundar Kand has only 11 verse, this is from Sarga 10 of SundarKand

Mods/VB can remove this post if they want

This actually is a good thought, he might have liked Kekayi more (assuming what is said about them is true), but still honored the hierarchy

Maybe he thought to give 1st half to Kaushalya, then half of remaining half to Sumitra, then half of remaining half to Kekayi and then distribute remaining 1/8th to all his wives. But after giving it to Kekayi he would have that it is getting complicated and also there wasn't much remaining to distribute to others, so decide to avoid the upcoming chaos and gave remaining to Sumitra
