Urmila has not got much attention in Ramayan, though her sacrifice and chastity for husband was matchless. People got to know much about Urmila when Rabindranath Tagore wrote beautiful poems about her love and sacrifice.
Yes Urmila did not go with Lakshman but not going with her husband was a bigger sacrifice.
Let's understand it: Urmila knew her husband's love and fondness for Shri Ram, Lakshman was incarnation of Sheshnag who accompany Lord Vishnu at baikunth loka coud not leave him alone in exile. Whatever Lakshman did in his life was a kind of devotion to Shri Ram.
When Devi Sita was going for exile, Urmila’s in laws asked her to accompany her husband, but she said if I go with Lakshman, he has to take care of me as well and we will become two couples, having his wife with him will hamper his duty and devotion towards Shri Ram and I know very well that my husband's devotion and love towards Shri Ram. I can live alone for 14 years but can't disturb my husband's duty.
Urmila gave up all her luxuries and started living like a snaysin in her palace.
But to make this separation bearable yognidra who is a form of Laxmi give a boon to urmila to sleep for 14years, sleeping in day for herself and sleeping in night for her husband.
This made Urmila goddess of love and sacrifice and people always remember her love for her husband.
Victory over sleep made Lakshman “gudakesh” who killed Meghnad (son of Ravana) later.
Meghnad had a boon that only a person who has not slept from 14 years can kill him..and that was impossible right?
It became possible only because of Urmila and hence she plays vital role in this Sacred epic Ramayan.
She had her part to create the history, and if we create the history with good deeds its not only justified but celebrated over and over again
